The Yale Libi Digital Lever Keyed replaces a standard keyed leverset with a keypad, and does it without asking you to install an app, create an account or connect to Wi-Fi. Entry is by PIN code on a proximity-activated backlit keypad, backed by a mechanical key override that works whatever the batteries are doing.

It belongs to Yale's Essential Series, and it is built as a direct swap for an existing leverset on a single 54mm bore hole with no deadbolt. The backset adjusts to 60mm or 70mm, both levers reverse with the supplied allen wrench, and in most cases the job needs nothing more than a screwdriver.

The feature that sets the lever apart from its deadbolt sibling is the interior slider. Flick it one way for Auto-lock mode and the outside lever locks immediately, then relocks itself after a set delay. Flick it the other way for Passage Mode and the door simply stays unlatched - genuinely useful when you are carrying washing to the line or moving in and out of the garden, and no risk of locking yourself out.

The lock holds up to 75 codes in total (70 standard plus five single-use), each 4 to 10 digits, and locks out for 90 seconds after five wrong attempts. It runs on a single 9V alkaline battery for around 12 months of normal use, meets ANSI/BHMA Grade 2, and comes in Satin Nickel or Matt Black.

This is a digital lock, not a connected smart lock
The Libi is deliberately offline. There is no app, no Bluetooth, no Wi-Fi, no remote access and no activity log, and it is not part of the Yale Home ecosystem - it will not pair with the Yale Home Module, the Yale Smart Keypad 2 or the Yale Connect Plus Hub 2. If you want phone control, remote access or guest management, step up to the Yale Home range below. If you simply want to stop carrying keys, this is the simplest way to do it. The Libi lever needs one 9V alkaline battery. Yale specifically recommends alkaline for stable voltage - do not use zinc-carbon cells. You will also need a Phillips screwdriver and a tape measure to install.

Battery, Power & Emergency Access

The Libi lever runs on a single 9V alkaline battery, which is unusual for a digital leverset and worth knowing before you buy - the matching Libi deadbolt uses four AA cells instead. Expect roughly 12 months of service at around ten cycles a day. The battery clips into a holder inside the interior assembly, reached by sliding the battery cover up and off.

When it runs low the lock gives ten long beeps and ten red flashes on every operation. Replace it promptly. If it does go flat, the mechanical key still works - the cylinder in the exterior lever is entirely independent of the electronics.

Keep a spare key somewhere sensible
Because the Libi has no app and no gateway, the mechanical key is your only backup. Keep one off-site or in a key safe rather than inside the house it opens - a Yale Y500 combination key safe or an ABUS Key Garage both work well. More on this in key storage for smart locks.
Tips
If the battery keeps going flat early
The most common cause outdoors is the proximity sensor being triggered all day by something moving nearby - a branch swaying in the breeze, or a screen door flapping. The sensor can be switched off from the programming menu so the keypad wakes on touch instead, which meaningfully extends battery life on an exposed door. Security Features

Automatic 90 second lockout
Five incorrect codes in a row and the keypad shuts down for 90 seconds, flashing red five times with five long beeps. A simple, effective brake on anyone trying codes at your door.
Unique first four digits
Every user code must start with a different four-digit sequence, so 1-2-3-4-5 and 1-2-3-4-6 cannot both exist. It is deliberate - it stops a shorter code accidentally unlocking part-way through someone entering a longer one.
Vacation Mode
Suspends every user code and all electronic function while you are away. Codes stay in memory and simply stop working until the mode is switched off. If you have set a Programming Code you can use it to disable Vacation Mode from the outside - worth setting up before you travel.
One-time codes for tradespeople
Up to five single-use codes can be stored. Each deletes itself the moment it is used and can then be re-created - a clean way to let a cleaner or a plumber in once without handing over a permanent code.
Understand what Passage Mode does
While the slider is in Passage Mode the door is unlatched and anyone can walk in - it is a convenience mode, not a security mode. Switch back to Auto-lock whenever the house is unattended. The wider point about leaving a lock in a permissive state is made in the perils of the internal snib.
Weather
Weather exposure and coastal installations
The Libi is built for residential entry doors, not gates, and the interior assembly must never be exposed to the weather. Yale publishes no IP rating for this model. On the Gold Coast, fit it where it is sheltered from driving rain and salt spray - under a porch or eave is ideal - and wipe the exterior with a damp cloth occasionally to lift salt build-up. Installation
Installation notes
Do not use an electric screwdriver - hand-tighten only, and tighten the two 47.5mm mounting screws evenly so both assemblies sit parallel to the door edge. Set the latch backset to 60mm or 70mm before fitting, and check the faceplate matches your door edge (a round drive-in collar is supplied as an optional alternative to the standard faceplate). When fitting the exterior lever, insert the key and turn it 90 degrees clockwise only, push the lever fully home, then tighten the set screw and return the key to horizontal to remove it. Frequently Asked Questions

Will the Libi lever fit my door?
It suits most standard single bore hole preparation doors in Australia. You need a door 35mm to 45mm thick, a 60mm or 70mm backset and a 54mm bore hole with no separate deadbolt. If your existing keyed leverset is a standard Australian cylindrical set, it almost certainly matches. What does the slider actually do?
It selects one of two modes. Slide it to the right for Auto-lock mode: the outside lever locks immediately and the lock auto-locks after a set delay, default five seconds. Slide it to the left for Passage Mode: the outside lever unlocks immediately and the door stays unlatched, so it opens without a code or a key. It is the feature the deadbolt version does not have.
Does it really run on one 9V battery?
Yes. The Libi lever uses a single 9V alkaline battery, not AA cells, and Yale rates it for up to 12 months at around ten cycles a day. No. The Libi is completely offline - no app, no Bluetooth pairing, no account, no cloud service and no subscription. Codes are programmed at the keypad. Does it matter if my door is left or right handed?
No. Both levers reverse using the supplied allen wrench, so the lock suits either handing. The exterior lever is removed by turning the key 90 degrees clockwise and loosening the pre-installed set screw; the interior lever comes off by loosening its set screw alone. Additional Information

How the code capacity actually works
Yale advertises "up to 75 user codes" and both numbers in that claim matter: the lock stores 70 standard user codes plus 5 one-time codes. Standard codes stay until you delete them; one-time codes erase themselves after a single use and can then be re-created. Deleting all user codes disables keypad entry entirely until you add a new one, and the lock reverts to key-only operation in the meantime.
Set a Programming Code before you need it
By default, programming happens through a small button under the battery cover, reachable with a pin or the supplied allen key - which means opening the interior assembly every time you add a code. An optional Programming Code lets you do all of it from the keypad instead, and it is the only way to disable Vacation Mode from outside the house. Two caveats: it cannot match any user code and it will not unlock the door, and once enabled the physical button is reduced to factory-reset duty only. Lose the Programming Code and a factory reset is the only way back.
The proximity sensor and battery life
The light sensor that wakes the keypad is a genuine convenience at night, but on an exposed door it can be triggered repeatedly through the day by movement nearby - a branch in the breeze is the classic culprit - and that quietly drains the battery. Door Fit and Compatibility

What door does the Libi Digital Lever Keyed fit?
Most single bore hole standard preparation doors in Australia. The three numbers that matter are door thickness 35mm to 45mm, backset 60mm or 70mm, and bore hole 54mm. It is a leverset replacement for a single-hole preparation with no deadbolt. Work through Chapter 02 - identifying your existing hardware if you are unsure what you currently have.
What is a backset and how do I change it?
The backset is the distance from the door edge to the centre of the bore hole on the door face - 60mm and 70mm are the two Australian standards. The supplied latch adjusts between them: the latch ships set for 60mm, and pulling the spindle cam fully across converts it to 70mm. Keep the cams square when you do it. Is it handed, and how do I reverse it?
It suits both left and right-hand doors. To reverse the exterior lever, insert the key and turn it 90 degrees clockwise, loosen the pre-installed set screw and pull the lever and cylinder off, then refit on the other orientation and re-tighten. The interior lever is simpler again - loosen its set screw, swap it, re-tighten. The supplied allen wrench does both jobs.
Can I fit it to a gate, a screen door or a fire door?
No to all three. It is a residential entry-door lock with no fire rating and no published IP rating, and the interior half is not weather rated. For a security screen door look at the Yale Unity Security Screen Door Lock; for a fire door, the Unity Entrance Fire Rated or the DDA-lever Fire Rated with DDA Lever. Is the lever DDA compliant?
Yale makes no AS 1428.1 accessibility claim for the Libi, so it should not be specified where DDA compliance is required. A lever handle is inherently easier to operate than a knob, but that is not the same as certification. Slider, Passage Mode and Auto-Lock

What are the two slider modes?
Auto-lock mode means a key or code is needed to get in from outside, and the lock relocks itself after a set delay. Passage Mode means the door stays unlatched and opens freely from either side. Sliding to the right enables Auto-lock and immediately locks the outside lever; sliding to the left enables Passage Mode and immediately unlocks it.
What is the auto-lock delay and can I change it?
The default is five seconds. To change it, enter the programming menu, select the auto-lock timing step and enter your preferred delay - anywhere from 1 to 99 seconds. Auto-locking only operates while the slider is in Auto-lock mode; it is disabled by definition in Passage Mode.
When would I actually use Passage Mode?
Any time you are moving in and out repeatedly and do not want the door locking behind you - hanging washing, gardening, unloading the car, carrying shopping in from the driveway, or a work-from-home day when the courier is due. It is the reason many people choose the lever over the deadbolt.
Is Passage Mode a security risk?
It is a convenience mode, not a security mode - while it is engaged the door is unlatched and anyone can walk in. Switch back to Auto-lock before you leave or go to bed. The general principle is covered in the perils of the internal snib.

Codes and Programming

How many codes can I store, and how long can they be?
Up to 70 standard user codes plus 5 one-time codes, each between 4 and 10 digits. The first four digits of every code must be unique - the lock will not accept 1-2-3-4-5 alongside 1-2-3-4-6.
How do I get into the programming menu?
If you have not set a Programming Code, press the programming button under the battery cover - a small pin or the supplied allen key reaches it. If you have set a Programming Code, enter it and press the confirm button instead. Either way, if no button is pressed for five seconds the system times out and you start again.
What can I set from the programming menu?
Add and delete user codes, add and delete one-time codes, set or clear the Programming Code, enable or disable auto-lock and set its delay, toggle the sound on or off, and switch Vacation Mode on or off. The factory reset also lives on the same button.
How do one-time codes work?
Up to five can be stored, each 4 to 10 digits. The code is deleted automatically the moment it is used, and the same digits can be programmed again afterwards. They are ideal for a one-off delivery, an inspection or a tradesperson.
What does Vacation Mode do, and can I turn it off from outside?
It disables every user code and all electronic function while it is on. The codes are not erased - they are inactive until you switch the mode off. While it is running the door must be locked and unlocked with the mechanical key. If you have a Programming Code set, you can use it to enter the programming menu and disable Vacation Mode from the outside - which is exactly why setting one before you travel is worthwhile.
My codes will not register. Why?
Three usual reasons. The code is outside the 4 to 10 digit range; the first four digits duplicate an existing code; or you took longer than five seconds to enter it while the keypad was awake, so the process timed out. Also check you have not already hit the 70-code ceiling.

Power and Batteries

What battery does it take?
One 9V alkaline battery, not supplied. Yale rates it for up to 12 months at around ten cycles a day and specifically recommends alkaline for stable, prolonged supply. The deadbolt version of the Libi uses four AA cells instead, so do not assume the two are the same.
Why is my battery going flat so quickly?
Start with the proximity sensor. If something near the door moves regularly - a branch, a hanging plant, a flapping screen - the sensor keeps waking the keypad all day and the battery pays for it. The sensor can be disabled from the programming menu. The second thing to check is the internal cable: remove the battery cover and battery, undo the two mounting screws, part the interior assembly and confirm the cable is seated firmly in its socket. Then check door and strike alignment, covered in door alignment and what actually fails.
What if I am locked out with a flat battery?
Use the mechanical key. There is no USB jump-start port on the Libi, so the key is the sole backup - which is precisely why we recommend keeping one in a wall-mounted key safe or a padlock-style key garage outside the door.

Installation and Troubleshooting

What tools do I need?
In most cases a Phillips screwdriver, a tape measure and the supplied allen wrench. Yale is explicit that you should not use an electric screwdriver during installation. If your door has no existing bore, you will need to drill a 54mm face bore from both sides and a 25.4mm edge bore using the supplied template; metal doors additionally need two 4mm holes per the template.
Standard faceplate or drive-in collar?
Both are supplied. The standard faceplate needs the door edge chiselled about 4mm deep so it sits flush. The optional drive-in collar avoids chiselling entirely - it drives straight into the edge bore, bevel facing the outside assembly. Check the faceplate is correct for the latch before you fit anything: it prises off with a slotted screwdriver and swaps over.
I cannot turn the key after installation. How do I fix it?
This is the most common Libi lever install fault and it has a specific cause. When you mount the exterior lever on the shaft, the key must be inserted and turned 90 degrees clockwise only. Then push the lever and cylinder fully home so they sit flush, tighten the set screw, and finally return the key to horizontal to withdraw it. Turn the key the wrong way, or tighten before the lever is fully seated, and the cylinder will not operate.
The door will not lock and I get three short beeps.
Check the slider first - if it is in the Passage position the lock is deliberately held unlatched. Slide it back to Auto-lock. If that is not it, the battery may be too low to drive the mechanism.
None of the buttons respond and there is no backlight.
Either the battery has no useful charge left, or the interior cable is not connected properly. Replace the 9V battery first and confirm the connector is fully clipped on; if it is still dead, open the interior assembly and re-seat the cable from the interior unit.
How do I factory reset the lock?
Remove the battery cover and hold the programming button for more than five seconds until you hear three long beeps. A small pin or the supplied allen key reaches the button. Everything returns to factory settings and all user codes are erased.
How should I clean it?
A damp cloth, nothing more. Do not use chemicals or add lubricants - both damage the panel and the coating. Near the coast, an occasional wipe to remove salt build-up will do more for the lock's life than anything else.
Can Terry's install it for me?

Choosing and Comparing

Who is the Libi actually for?
Households that want to stop carrying keys and nothing more. No app to install, no account to create, no firmware to update, no Wi-Fi to drop out. If that description fits, the Libi does the job at the lowest possible complexity. If you want remote access, guest scheduling or an activity feed, it is the wrong lock and you should be looking at the Yale Home range. Five questions to work out which platform suits you.
Leverset or deadbolt - which Libi should I buy?
Match it to what is on the door now. If you are replacing a keyed leverset or knobset, this is the model, and you get Passage Mode with it. If you are replacing a deadbolt, choose the Libi Digital Lock Keyed, which swaps Passage Mode for One Touch locking and runs on AA cells. Where a door has both a latch and a deadbolt, you can fit this lever below and the deadbolt above. The distinction is explained in deadlatch versus deadbolt and Chapter 01.
What are the closest alternatives from other brands?
The Carbine CDL2 Digital Lever Lock is the nearest match - PIN plus key override, no app, with a thumbturn-controlled auto-lock rather than a slider. The McGrath SJ8015 covers the same door preparation but adds RFID and app control. For RFID without an app, the Carbine CEL-3IN1 leverset.
Is ANSI/BHMA Grade 2 good enough?
Grade 2 is the standard residential specification and is appropriate for a domestic entry, laundry or side door. It is not a commercial rating - for high-traffic entrances you want a mortice-based lock. Yale branded products are manufactured and warranted in Australia by ASSA ABLOY Australia Pty Ltd. Coverage is tiered by component type - mechanical parts, electrical and electronic components, and keys each carry their own warranty period. The summary below sets out each period, what is excluded, and how to make a claim through Gold Coast Smart Locks.

This warranty applies to genuine Yale products purchased new in Australia from ASSA ABLOY or its authorised resellers. It operates in addition to your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.

  1. Keep your proof of original purchase (invoice or receipt).
  2. Contact Gold Coast Smart Locks - operated by Terry's Tradies Pty Ltd and its associated websites, trading names, and subsidiaries - as your authorised retailer, and follow the steps on our Returns & Warranty page.
  3. Return the product securely packed to protect it in transit, together with your proof of purchase and your name, address, email and phone number.
  4. ASSA ABLOY assesses the claim. Where the warranty applies, they will (at their option) repair the product, replace it with the same or closest equivalent Yale product, or refund the price you paid.

Claims made directly to ASSA ABLOY require a Case Number from their Customer Service Department before goods are returned - products sent back without a Case Number may not be accepted. Costs of returning a product are the customer's responsibility.

What Is Not Covered

  • Normal wear and tear.
  • Misuse, abuse, accident, or use outside Yale's published technical specifications.
  • Improper maintenance or neglect, or failure to follow ASSA ABLOY's care and maintenance recommendations.
  • Use of batteries other than those specified; batteries themselves are not covered.
  • Unauthorised alteration, modification or repair by anyone other than ASSA ABLOY authorised personnel.
  • Custom orders made to components or specifications supplied by someone other than ASSA ABLOY.
  • Goods that were not new when purchased, second-hand goods, or products not originally sold in Australia through ASSA ABLOY or an authorised reseller.
  • Products with brands, marks, plates, numbers or other ASSA ABLOY information defaced or removed.
  • Use of substitute, replacement or non-genuine ASSA ABLOY parts or cylinders.
  • Corrosive exposure, including vapours, chemicals, abrasive compounds, contamination, pollution, coastal air, salt spray and high humidity.
  • Removal, refitment or replacement of products, and any associated charges.

Important Notes

Batteries, finishes and stainless steel
Batteries are consumable and are not covered. Cosmetic finishes and appearance are excluded. Stainless steel resists staining but is not stain-proof - tea staining is a natural process and is not covered where cleaning and maintenance guidelines have not been followed.
Coastal and corrosive environments
Damage from salt spray, coastal air, high humidity and other corrosives is excluded. In Gold Coast and coastal locations, choose a suitable finish and follow the care and maintenance guidance to protect your hardware and preserve your cover.

Your Rights Under the Australian Consumer Law

In addition to this warranty
This manufacturer's warranty is in addition to other rights and remedies you may have under the law. Our goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. You are entitled to a replacement or refund for a major failure and to compensation for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. You are also entitled to have the goods repaired or replaced if they fail to be of acceptable quality and the failure does not amount to a major failure.
