Carbine Shackle Mounted Key Safe - Button Combination (Large)
The Carbine CKS-SH-BUT-L is a large shackle mounted key safe with a 10-button mechanical combination. It combines the portability of a shackle-mounted format with the speed and flexibility of a push-button code - making it the most versatile mechanical option in the Carbine shackle range for situations where codes change frequently or where fast, single-handed access matters.
The integrated 9.5 mm shackle attaches to gates, fence rails, handrails, pipes, or any suitable anchor point without drilling. The 10-button combination uses a Setting Key mechanism to define which buttons form the code, allowing a wide variety of unique sequences. No combination is set at the factory - the unit ships with the Opening Lever functional from the outset, ready for the user to set their first code on site. This is a fully mechanical product with no batteries and no electronics.
The shackle-mounted button model is the portable counterpart to the wall-mounted CKS-W-BUT-L. Where the wall model is the right choice for a permanent outdoor location, the CKS-SH-BUT-L suits temporary installations, rental properties, and sites where drilling is not permitted. For guidance on how to choose the right key safe format, see our overview of mechanical key safe technology.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. The CKS-SH-BUT-L is fully mechanical. The 10-button combination and shackle mechanism operate with no battery, no electronics, and no power connection.
The CKS-SH-BUT-L ships with no combination set. To set your first code: open the Front Door, remove the Setting Key from inside, choose your combination and write it down, then use the Setting Key to turn the yellow dial behind each chosen button 180 degrees so the arrow points away from you. Return to the Front Door, test your combination, then return the Setting Key to its original position. Full illustrated steps are in the Brochure tab. Keep the Setting Key somewhere safe - you will need it to change the combination in future.
Open the key safe first. To release the shackle, pull the Release Lever towards you and pull out the shackle, then affix it to your chosen anchor point - a gate rail, fence post, or handrail. To close: hold the Release Lever towards you, relocate the shackle into the lock housing, then release the lever. No tools are required.
The Clear Button clears any buttons you have already pressed during a code entry attempt, allowing you to start again without opening the safe or triggering any lockout. It is useful when you make an error mid-entry. Pull the Clear Button before re-entering your combination from the beginning.
Button combinations are faster to operate single-handed, which is an advantage when you are holding a gate open or managing equipment. They also support more varied code sequences than a 4-digit dial. The CKS-SH-DI-L (dial model) is the simpler choice for a fixed code in a lit location; the button model is better suited to frequent code changes and fast access. If low-light access is the primary concern, the CKS-SH-DI-LED-L adds LED dials.
Additional Information
The 10-button format is preferred by property managers and short-stay hosts who change codes frequently. Unlike a dial, a button combination can be re-coded in a few minutes once you are familiar with the Setting Key process - no need to visit a locksmith or reset electronically. It is also one of the quickest mechanical access methods in low-light conditions, since each button has a distinct raised profile that can be located by touch. See our overview of key safe options for Airbnb hosts for broader context.
The CKS-SH-BUT-L and CKS-W-BUT-L use the same 10-button mechanism and Setting Key reset process. The wall model is the right choice for a permanent outdoor installation where the safe stays in one place. The shackle model is the right choice when you need portability, when you cannot drill, or when the safe may need to be moved or removed. Mount the shackle to a fixed, robust anchor point - a steel gate rail or solid post rather than a lightweight fence paling - to maximise physical security.
The CKS-SH-BUT-L is designed for outdoor and semi-exposed use. Carbine's instructions recommend mounting in a discrete location away from direct line of sight - a porch, garage entry, or gate recess. Where possible, choose a position that avoids direct driving rain to extend the service life of the button mechanism. For guidance on maintaining outdoor key safes in coastal or exposed locations, see our notes on coastal key safe maintenance.
