Carbine Shackle Mounted Key Safe - Dial Combination (Small)
The Carbine CKS-SH-DI-S is a small shackle mounted key safe with a 4-dial mechanical combination. The integrated shackle allows it to be secured to gates, fence rails, handrails, downpipes, or any suitable fixed anchor point without drilling or permanent installation - making it the most flexible mounting option in the Carbine key safe range.
A shutter hatch on the front face closes over the dials and opening lever, both concealing the combination from view and providing weather protection when the key safe is not in use. The shackle itself is removable and reattachable, allowing the safe to be relocated or transferred to a different site without tools. Factory preset at 0-0-0-0 and user-resettable via an internal reset lever, this is a fully mechanical product with no batteries or electronics.
Where the CKS-SH-DI-L (Large) provides greater internal capacity, the Small model suits applications where one or two standard keys need to be secured at a single portable location. For guidance on how shackle-mounted key safes compare to wall-mounted options, see our overview of mechanical key safe technology.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. The CKS-SH-DI-S is fully mechanical. The 4-dial combination and shackle mechanism operate with no battery, no electronics, and no connectivity of any kind.
The CKS-SH-DI-S ships preset at 0-0-0-0. To set your own code: open the shutter hatch and dial 0-0-0-0, then press down the opening lever to open the storage compartment. Inside, push the reset lever left and towards you until it clicks into position, then rotate the dials to your chosen combination. Push the reset lever back up and away from you to its original position. Double-check your combination before closing. Scramble the dials and close the shutter hatch when done. Full illustrated steps are in the Brochure tab.
Yes. The metal construction is designed for outdoor and semi-exposed environments. Carbine specifically instructs that the shutter hatch should be kept closed when the key safe is not in use - this increases weather resistance by protecting the dials and opening lever from direct rain and UV exposure. See our notes on outdoor key safe maintenance for further guidance.
The internal cavity measures 57 x 31 x 75 mm - suited to 1-2 standard door keys. It is not designed for bulky key fobs or multiple key sets. If you need to store more keys or accommodate larger fobs, the CKS-SH-DI-L (Large) offers a significantly larger cavity in the same shackle-mounted format.
The shackle can be secured to any anchor point it fits around - fence rails, gate frames, handrails, downpipes, bike rails, or similar fixed structures. It is removed by opening the key safe, sliding the Release Lever in the direction of the arrow, then opening and pulling out the shackle. To reattach, hold the Slide Lever in the direction of the arrow, relocate the shackle into the lock, then release the lever. No tools are required for shackle removal or reattachment.
Additional Information
The shutter hatch on the CKS-SH-DI-S serves two purposes: it conceals the dial positions from an observer who might read the last-used combination, and it protects the mechanism from direct rain, dust, and UV degradation. Carbine's instructions explicitly note that keeping the shutter hatch closed increases weather resistance. This is an important daily habit for outdoor installations - after each use, close the shutter hatch before leaving the site.
A wall-mounted key safe requires drilling, wall plugs, and a permanent decision about location. A shackle model like the CKS-SH-DI-S can be fitted to a gate, fence, or railing in under a minute with no tools and no damage to the surface - making it ideal for rental properties, leased sites, and strata buildings where tenants cannot drill. It can also be moved or removed entirely if the situation changes. The trade-off is that a shackle-mounted model is slightly more susceptible to physical removal than a wall-fixed unit. For a balance of portability and security, mount it on a fixed anchor point that itself cannot be easily removed.
The CKS-SH-DI-S (Small) and CKS-SH-DI-L (Large) share the same shackle-mounted format and dial mechanism. The Small is more compact and less conspicuous; the Large has a substantially bigger internal cavity and suits multiple keys or fobs. If you need to store a single spare key discreetly, the Small model is the right choice. If you need to store a full key set or access cards, step up to the Large.
