Decoding Lockwood Model Numbers
Lockwood's DX model numbers look cryptic, but they follow a simple pattern once you know it. Reading a code like 3572DXKOLSC from left to right:
One caveat: the short backset families count differently (3782, 4782, 5782 and 6782 step through 23, 25.4, 30 and 38mm backsets), but the idea is the same - the first digit steps through the backset options. Code Control - How the Code Works and How to Change It
The 3572DXKO ships with a factory-set 4 digit code, which you can change to any 4, 5 or 6 digit code of your own. The code lives in a mechanical tumbler chamber behind the keypad - there is no memory chip and nothing to reset electronically. Because it is a chamber rather than a sequence, each digit can be used once per code and the digits can be pressed in any order; the C button always clears a wrong entry and cannot be part of the code. Changing the code is a bench job, and an honest word: it is a fiddly one - the tumblers are small and the sequence matters - but it is entirely doable with the kit and the instructions in front of you. One advantage the KO model has over its PIN-only siblings: the override cylinder means a forgotten or mis-set code is an inconvenience, not a lockout - the key still opens the door while you sort the chamber out at the bench.

Handing and Ordering
The Lockwood mortice DX platform is not field-reversible: the orderable models are 3572DXKOLSC (left hand) and 3572DXKORSC (right hand), and the correct one must be selected when you order. Stand on the outside (keypad side) of the closed door: if the hinges are on your left, you need the left-hand unit; hinges on your right, the right-hand unit. Mortice DX locksets are commonly specified on commercial fire door assemblies, and the 3572DXKO suits that egress logic: entry is code-controlled (with a keyed path for authorised access), but exit through the inside handle is always free and single-action. Even so, no lock should be described as automatically fire compliant on its own. Fire performance belongs to the complete tested doorset - the door leaf, frame, lock, furniture, cylinder preparation and the installer's compliance - not to the lock in isolation.
Two practical notes for this model: the key override cylinder preparation is part of the tested combination, so it must be assessed with the doorset like everything else; and on Digital DX fire door applications the rubber mounting pad must not be fitted where the manufacturer's instructions require its omission.

Codes and Everyday Use
Two ways. By code: press C to clear anything already entered, press your code digits, then turn the keypad knob - the latch retracts, the door opens, and the code cancels automatically as the knob is operated. By key: insert the override key in the cylinder and open the door directly, no code needed. From the inside, the handle always opens the door freely.
That is the clutching mechanism doing its job. Until a valid code is entered, the knob freewheels and is not connected to the latch - so forcing or wrenching it transmits nothing to the lock's internals. Enter the code and the knob engages for one operation. It is one of the reasons these locks survive decades on high-traffic commercial doors.
It is a bench job with small parts, and we will not pretend otherwise: the keypad comes off the door and the code tumblers are repositioned with the supplied kit - fiddly, but well within reach of a patient owner with the instructions open. And the golden rule: test the new code five times before you close the door - though on this model the override key means even a botched change is recoverable.
Any 4, 5 or 6 digit code, with one mechanical rule: each digit can be used only once per code, because the code lives in a physical tumbler chamber rather than a memory chip. This is the model where that question has a comfortable answer: use the override key, open the door, take the keypad to the bench and set a fresh code with the kit. No locksmith callout, no drilled lock. On the PIN-only DX models a forgotten code is a bigger nuisance - which is exactly why the KO configuration exists for doors where guaranteed access matters.
The Key Override
Treat it like any other high-authority key: building management, the site security holder, and whoever your fire door schedule or emergency plan nominates. The whole value of the override is that it works when the code path does not - so the key should live somewhere controlled and findable, not on a hook by the door it opens. That is exactly what the no-cylinder variant is for: the 3572DXKONCYL is this same lock supplied without the cylinder, so your locksmith can fit a cylinder pinned to your existing system. Keys carry their own 12 month warranty term under Lockwood's warranty document - shorter than the 25 year mechanical cover on the lock itself, which is normal for cut keys. Spare and replacement keys are a locksmith service item; if you lose all keys, the code still gets you in and a locksmith can supply a new cylinder or re-pin the existing one.

The mortice DX platform is handed at order and not field-reversible, so this is the one detail to get right before checkout. If your door measures 127mm, the family's deep-backset lock is the 5572DX - PIN-only as listed, so ask us about a key override configuration at that backset before ordering. Same lock, three override configurations: the 3572DX is PIN-only (no cylinder at all); this 3572DXKO includes the keyed override cylinder ready to go; the 3572DXKONCYL is the KO lock supplied without a cylinder for sites fitting their own to suit an existing key system. Installation and Door Prep
On a fresh timber door with the manual in hand, a confident DIYer can do it: the Key Override mounting instructions and full-size drilling templates are on pages 21-22 of the Service Manual, covering all three backsets - note the KO preparation includes the cylinder hole, so it differs from the standard DX prep. The 3572DXKO suits doors from 32mm to 50mm thick. Standard Australian commercial doors sit comfortably inside that range; if your door is outside it (very thin aluminium infill, or an unusually thick solid-core leaf), talk to us before ordering rather than after.

Fire Doors and Egress
Its behaviour is right for it: exit through the inside handle is single-action and never needs a code or a key, which is the pattern egress paths demand. The keyed cylinder is on the outside face and does not touch the exit path. What the lock cannot do is make the doorset compliant by itself - that certification belongs to the whole tested assembly. Because printing a rating a doorset does not hold would be doing you a disservice. Fire performance is tested and certified against complete door assemblies - leaf, frame, lock, furniture, cylinder prep and installation together - and it is the approved fire door schedule for your building that says what may go on your door. The 25 year mechanical warranty excludes corrosion damage from coastal air, salt spray and high humidity, so near the water a regular fresh-water wipe-down of the keypad, cylinder and furniture - and following Lockwood's published care guidance at lockweb.com.au - is what keeps both the finish and the claim alive. Lockwood branded products are covered by manufacturer warranties issued by ASSA ABLOY Australia Pty Ltd. Warranty periods vary by product type, with separate cover for mechanical components, electrical and electronic parts, keys, and finishes.

- Everbrass finishes: up to 25 years against corrosion, tarnishing and discolouration.
- Stainless steel, polished stainless steel, chrome plating and anodised finishes: typically up to 10 years.
- PVD and VIVID finishes: typically up to 10 years.
- Symmetry range finishes: typically up to 5 years.
- Decorative finishes (Antique Copper, Architectural Bronze, Oil Rubbed Bronze, Aged Brass, Polished Brass, Satin Brass and related variants): typically up to 2 years against corrosion.
