The Borg BL5401SSDDAECP is a medium to heavy duty fully mechanical digital lock in satin stainless finish, combining Easicode Pro on-door code change with a DDA compliant AS1428.1-2009 flat bar lever. The flat bar lever needs far less grip force than a round bar lever, which is exactly why it is specified for disability access doors, accessible toilet facilities, and BCA-compliant commercial and institutional work. Because it is part of Borg's mechanical digital range, there are no batteries, no wiring, and nothing to charge - the keypad is a purely mechanical coding chamber.

The lock is fire rated to AS 1905.1-2005 (up to 4 hours, depending on the doorset it is fitted to), cycle tested past 100,000 operations, and accepts doors from 35mm to 80mm thick. The satin stainless finish suits internal doors and sheltered external doors in normal weather. It is not built for coastal or saline environments - for salt air, the same lock exists in Marine Grade Pro construction as the BL5401DDAMGPROECP. If you don't need on-door code changing, the BL5401SSDDA is the non-ECP version of this lock with a larger combination pool.

Borg BL5401 DDA Series - Product Family

What is the DDA lever and what makes it different from a standard lever?
The BL5401 uses a flat bar lever compliant with BCA AS1428.1-2009 (Design for Access and Mobility). It needs significantly less grip force and torque than a round bar lever, which makes it usable for people with limited hand strength, arthritis, or reduced dexterity. It is the correct lever type wherever BCA accessibility compliance is required of the locking hardware - disability access doors, accessible toilets, NDIS and SDA housing. How do I change the PIN code on the ECP model?
With the door open, enter the current code. Insert the code change key over the Φ button, rotate it 90° clockwise, then press and hold. Press C to clear, enter the new code digits, press all the digits again to confirm, then release the key, rotate it back and remove it. Press C or turn the lever to set. Test the new code at least 5 times before closing the door. The code is non-sequential - if it's 1234, then 4321 or any other order also opens the lock. How does the free passage function work?
Enter the correct code, rotate the lever, then press F while the lever is still rotating - the outside lever becomes free-turning and opens the door without a code. To return to locked: rotate the lever and press C until you hear a click. Free passage leaves the latch itself working normally, so the door still closes and latches - it is not the same thing as holdback, which physically holds a latch retracted. If site policy forbids free passage entirely, insert the supplied plug behind the F slot before installation to disable it permanently.
Can I install this on a fire door?
Yes - it is tested to AS 1905.1-2005 on fire door assemblies, rated up to 4 hours depending on the doorset. The rating belongs to the whole assembly, so every other item of hardware on the door (closer, hinges, seals) must also be fire-rated and compatible with the doorset certification. Should I choose this ECP model or the non-ECP BL5401SSDDA?
Choose this ECP model if codes will change more than once or twice a year - staff turnover, contractors, shared amenities - because each change is a 30-second on-door job. Choose the non-ECP BL5401SSDDA if the code will rarely change and you want the larger combination pool (8,000+ vs 1,000+); its code change is a tumbler repositioning job with the lock off the door - the bench method. The DDA flat bar lever meets the design requirements of AS1428.1-2009 for locking hardware in accessible environments. Spindle Fitting on Third-Party Lockcases:
The 8mm square drive spindle suits most leading tubular latch and lockcase brands. When trimming a spindle to length, keep at least 15mm of blade engaged in each handle - cut too short, the spindle can slip if the door is slammed. Accessibility and Compliance

Who typically specifies this lock?
Access consultants, builders and certifiers working on BCA-compliant projects: accessible toilets in commercial buildings, NDIS and SDA housing, healthcare and aged care, schools and clubs. The flat bar lever is the item that satisfies AS1428.1-2009 for the door hardware; the keypad is what removes key management from shared facilities. Can people always get out from the inside?
Yes. The inside DDA lever is always free - no code, no key, no thought required to exit. Only the outside lever is code-controlled. What exactly does the AS 1905.1 fire rating cover?
The lock has been successfully tested on fire door assemblies to AS 1905.1-2005, with results up to 4 hours depending on the doorset. The figure always belongs to the tested assembly - door leaf, frame, closer, hinges, seals and lock together - so the doorset's certification governs what your installation achieves. Easicode Pro and Codes

What is the full Easicode Pro code change procedure?
With the door open: (1) enter the existing code; (2) insert the code change key over the Φ button, rotate 90° clockwise, press and hold; (3) press C to clear; (4) press the new digits twice; (5) release the key, rotate back and remove; (6) press C or turn the lever to set; (7) the new code is live; (8) test it at least 5 times before closing the door. If the new code fails, the old and new digits may have combined - enter both together and repeat from step 1. If the lever free-turns, the new code never set - repeat from step 2. We've lost the code - can it be recovered?
Yes, with the unit off the door. The back of the keypad has 10 portholes, one per button. Press C to reset, then read the tumbler markings through the portholes: red lines closest to the porthole centre are coded digits, blue lines are uncoded. Note the digits (there is no sequence - all coded buttons pressed in any order opens the lock), refit the unit, then change the code on the door. Procedure with diagram: Borg ECP instructions page 6.
Can I stop staff changing the code on the door?
Yes. The box includes an on-door code change deactivation plug - insert it into the arrow-marked hole at the top centre of the keypad back (dome up) before installation, and the code can then only be changed with the unit off the door. Handy for managed sites where only maintenance should touch codes. Procedure: Borg ECP instructions page 2.
Why does the code work in any order?
The mechanical coding chamber reads which buttons are depressed, not the sequence. That is why the combination pool is stated as "over 1,000" rather than the millions an electronic keypad claims - it is an honest mechanical figure. Avoid obvious sets (1-2-3-4) and change the code when staff leave. Day-to-day: press C first to reset, enter the code, pull the lever down.

Installation and Setup

How do I reverse the handing on site?
All BL5401 units ship factory set for right-hand doors. Remove the rubber grommet at the base of the keypad handle, use the included hex wrench to remove the grub screw, rotate the handle 180° and refit; repeat for the inside handle. Can I install it myself?
Yes, on a standard timber door it is a competent-DIY job: the drilling template gives the 159mm hole centres and the 60mm/70mm backset lines, and the supplied M4 screws cover the full 35-80mm door range. Fire doors are the exception - drilling a fire door has compliance and (in older buildings) asbestos implications, so use a professional; see our advice and installation service.
Will it drive a third-party lockcase instead of the supplied latch?
Usually yes - the 8mm square drive spindle suits most leading tubular latch and mortice lockcase brands, and the two supplied spindles (80mm and 90mm) cover most door builds. Keep at least 15mm of spindle blade engaged in each handle when trimming; angle the blade to the top opening edge of the door. Suitability and Environment

Can it go on an outside door?
Yes, if the door is sheltered - a covered entry, an internal courtyard, a door under a deep awning. The satin stainless grading is internal plus sheltered external in normal weather. Fully exposed coastal or beachside doors need the Marine Grade Pro version with its 316 stainless internals and 1,000 hour salt spray rating.
Is it heavy duty enough for a busy public entrance?
For a genuinely high-traffic public entrance - hundreds of cycles a day, every day - a maximum-heavy-duty mortice lock is the better tool: the Lockwood 3572DX, Borg BL7701 or Carbine CDL7200. The BL5401 is a medium-heavy duty lock - 100,000+ cycles covers offices, amenities and institutional doors comfortably, provided a servicing schedule is kept on busier doors. Is this suitable where anti-ligature hardware is required?
No - the DDA flat bar lever is an accessibility lever, not an anti-ligature design. For behavioural health, correctional or other ligature-risk environments, use a purpose-built anti-ligature product such as the Borg BL2901SCECP anti-ligature knob.

The keypad is worn or damaged - do I replace the whole lock?
No. The BL5401KSSDDAECP spare ECP keypad is the direct replacement outside unit - the latch, inside handle and fixings stay on the door. The non-ECP BL5401KSSDDA keypad also fits, but the coding chamber lives in the keypad, so fitting it changes the lock to the tumbler bench code change method. Borg Locks Warranty

Borg products sold in Australia are covered against mechanical defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and service. Warranty claims are handled by Terry's Tradies Pty Ltd and its associated websites, trading names, and subsidiaries.

What the Warranty Covers

  • Mechanical defects in materials and workmanship
  • Defects arising under normal use and service conditions
  • Repair or replacement of defective units at the discretion of the Australian distributor (LSC)

What the Warranty Does Not Cover

  • Damage arising from misuse, vandalism, or abuse
  • Damage resulting from improper installation
  • Locks that have been dismantled - dismantling invalidates the warranty
  • Normal wear and tear
  • Cosmetic damage not affecting function

How to Make a Claim

  1. Contact Terry's Tradies Pty Ltd first if you purchased through us or one of its associated trading names - we will assess the issue and manage the warranty process with LSC on your behalf. You do not need to contact LSC or Borg Locks UK directly.
  2. Have your proof of purchase ready (receipt or order confirmation).
  3. Warranty claims for Borg products in Australia are processed through LSC, the authorised Australian importer and distributor. Where an item is returned to LSC, freight charges must be prepaid and the item returned within the warranty period.
  4. If LSC finds the returned item to be defective, it will be repaired or replaced, and a detailed assessment report is provided to the customer after examination.
Australian Consumer Law
Our goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. You are entitled to a replacement or refund for a major failure and compensation for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. You are also entitled to have the goods repaired or replaced if the goods fail to be of acceptable quality and the failure does not amount to a major failure. The Borg manufacturer warranty above operates alongside - and does not limit - these statutory rights.
