Carbine CEL-RFID MIFARE Card – Blue/White

The Carbine CEL-RFID is a MIFARE 13.56MHz RFID card designed as an additional or replacement credential for Carbine CEL-3IN1 and CEL2 series digital locks. Sold individually, it is compatible with any Carbine CEL or CEL2 lock that reads MIFARE (ISO14443 Type A) credentials. See: Buyers Guide Ch03: RFID access methods.

The card operates at 13.56MHz and uses the MIFARE chip standard — the same chip type used in many Australian public transport cards (Go card, Opal, Myki, SmartRider, MyWay, metroCard). It is not compatible with EMV chips used in bank cards (Visa PayWave, Mastercard PayPass), which use ISO14443 Type B. Each card is enrolled directly through the lock’s programming mode; no separate programmer, software, or app is required.

The CEL-RFID is credit card sized (86 × 54mm) and suitable for everyday carry in a wallet or card holder. It is part of Carbine’s CEL RFID credentials range, which also includes RFID stickers, key FOBs, silicone wristbands, and Ultra FOBs.

Carbine CEL RFID Credentials Range
All five credential types are compatible with Carbine CEL-3IN1 and CEL2 RFID-capable locks. Choose the format that best suits your users:

Key Features

  • MIFARE 13.56MHz (ISO14443 Type A) — compatible with Carbine CEL-3IN1 and CEL2 digital locks.
  • Credit card format — standard 86 × 54 × 0.8mm dimensions; fits in any wallet or card holder.
  • Enrolled directly through the lock in programming mode — no separate reader, programmer, or app required.
  • PVC construction with operating temperature range of -25°C to 70°C.
  • Sold individually — order the number of cards required per user.
  • Also compatible with NFC-enabled smartphones with MIFARE support — test the specific handset model before relying on phone-based access. See: Buyers Guide Ch03: RFID access methods

Suitable Uses

  • Additional RFID credential for residential properties managed with a Carbine CEL-3IN1 or CEL2 lock.
  • Replacement card where an existing credential has been lost or decommissioned — deleted from the lock individually through programming mode without affecting other enrolled credentials.
  • Issuing access to cleaners, contractors, or tradies without sharing a PIN code. See: Airbnb smart locks — credential management
  • Short-term rental and Airbnb properties where tenant turnover requires regular credential changes — individual card deletion means no lock reset required when a credential is revoked.
  • Multi-user residential or light commercial installs requiring individual credential assignment per user.
  • Building managers who prefer card-based access over PIN codes for staff and visitors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will any RFID card work with my Carbine CEL lock?
Only MIFARE credentials using ISO14443 Type A chips are compatible. This includes transport cards (Go card, Opal, Myki etc.), generic MIFARE key cards, and this CEL-RFID card. Credit cards (Visa PayWave, Mastercard PayPass) use EMV chips (ISO14443 Type B) and are not compatible. If unsure about a credential you already have, check that it states “MIFARE” or “13.56MHz ISO14443 Type A” on its packaging. See: Buyers Guide Ch03: RFID access methods
How many RFID cards can the CEL lock store?
The CEL-3IN1 and CEL2 locks share a combined credential pool. On the CEL2 series, the combined pool is 100 credentials (shared across PIN codes and RFID cards). On the CEL2-BT leverset series, the pool is 200 combined credentials (PIN codes + RFID cards + 10 separate Bluetooth users). Check the user guide for your specific model to confirm the limits. Planning credential allocation before issuing cards avoids running out of slots.
Can I use my NFC-enabled smartphone instead of a card?
Most NFC-enabled Android smartphones support MIFARE and can be used in place of a physical card. However, NFC behaviour varies between manufacturers and models — it is strongly recommended to test your specific handset before committing to phone-only access. Apple iPhones do not support third-party MIFARE credentials via NFC in the same way as Android. If a smartphone is not compatible, Carbine RFID stickers (adhered to the back of the phone) are an alternative option.
How do I enrol this card into my lock?
Cards are enrolled directly through the lock’s programming mode — no separate programmer, software, or app is required. The process is covered in the CEL-3IN1 User Guide PDF linked below. Briefly: enter programming mode using the master code, select the Add Card function, then present the card to the RFID reader zone on the lock body. Each card is assigned its own credential slot in the lock’s memory.
Is this card compatible with the CEL2-BT (Bluetooth) variant?
RFID card access is available on all CEL2-BT leverset models. It is not available on the CEL2-BT deadbolt variants (CEL2-BT-DBSNKIT / CEL2-BT-DBMBKIT), which support PIN and Bluetooth only. Confirm your lock model before ordering.

Additional Information

MIFARE vs EMV — Know the Difference:
The most common source of confusion when sourcing RFID credentials is the difference between MIFARE (ISO14443 Type A) and EMV (ISO14443 Type B) chips. Bank cards including Visa PayWave and Mastercard PayPass use EMV chips and will not register on a CEL lock. MIFARE credentials include Opal cards, Myki cards, Go cards, generic building access cards, and this CEL-RFID card. When sourcing third-party credentials, confirm the chip type is MIFARE / ISO14443 Type A before purchasing. See: Carbine CEL RFID Application List (PDF)
Smartphone RFID Access — Test Before Relying On It:
While most modern NFC-enabled Android phones support MIFARE, each manufacturer implements NFC differently. Some phones restrict background NFC reads, require specific app handshakes, or position the NFC antenna in a location that makes presentation to the lock inconsistent. Carbine recommends testing the specific handset model prior to installation. For phone-based access that proves unreliable, Carbine RFID stickers can be adhered to the back of the phone as an alternative. RFID stickers work best positioned toward the top of the phone and may be affected by wireless charging pads.
Credential Pool and Combined Limits:
On CEL locks, PIN codes and RFID cards draw from a shared credential pool. Adding more RFID cards reduces the number of available PIN code slots, and vice versa. Plan your credential allocation before issuing cards across multiple users. Where a mix of PIN and card access is required, consider assigning cards to users who require keyless carry (cleaners, contractors) and PIN codes to resident users.
Revoking Lost or Compromised Cards:
If a card is lost, it can be deleted from the lock individually through programming mode without affecting other enrolled credentials. Refer to the CEL-3IN1 User Guide for the card deletion procedure. Deleting and re-enrolling credentials does not require a factory reset of the lock.
