Borg BL3100 Mechanical Digital Gate Lock - Single Keypad - Marine Grade - Black

At A Glance

At A Glance
PIN code, outside keypadPIN Code (Outside Keypad)

The Borg BL3100BLK is a fully mechanical, single-sided keypad gate lock from Borg's purpose-built gate lock family - it clamps to the face of a metal box-section gate post with no mortice cutting, and carries a lever keypad on the outside face with a free-turning paddle handle on the inside. It is the compact, single-sided model in the BL3100-BL3400 gate lock series: no back-to-back keypads, no key override, just a straightforward keyed-in, free-out gate lock for one-way code control.

The outside lever remains free-turning until the correct PIN is entered, then releases to retract the spring-loaded latch. The inside paddle handle is always free to operate for immediate egress, and can optionally be held in the open position using a removable holdback function. There are no batteries, no wiring, and nothing to charge - the keypad and latch are entirely mechanical, with codes set by repositioning the supplied tumblers at a bench.

The marine grade keypad is tested to 1,000 hours of salt water exposure, the spring-loaded latch bolt adjusts from 65mm to 80mm of projection with 20mm of bolt withdrawal, and the lever is reversible on site to suit either hand of gate. Browse the full Digital Mechanical Locks range for every battery-free keypad lock we stock.

Marine Grade Keypad - 1,000 Hour Salt Water Tested
The keypad is marine grade quality, tested to 1,000 hours of salt water exposure, with the housing finished in black powder coat - good protection for coastal and outdoor Australian conditions. For severe, front-line coastal exposure, step up to the BL3400MGPROECP, which carries Borg's full Marine Grade Pro external coating - the grades are unpacked in MG Pro and ECP explained.
Tumbler code change icon
Code Changes Are a Bench Job on This Model
This is a standard-chamber Borg lock: changing the PIN means taking the lock off the gate and repositioning the code tumblers at a bench using the supplied tweezers. It is entirely doable - the process is covered step by step in the bench method and Borg standard chambers - but if codes will rotate often, the Easicode Pro sibling changes codes on the gate in a couple of minutes.
Free egress icon
Inside Handle Always Free - No Code Required to Exit
The inside paddle handle is free-turning at all times, giving immediate egress without entering a code. Worth knowing on a gate: because this is single-sided, anyone tall enough to reach over the top of the gate can potentially reach the free inside handle from outside too. If that reach-over risk matters on your site, the back-to-back BL3430GATE requires the code from both sides instead - see why back-to-back matters on gates.
Holdback icon
Optional Holdback Function
The inside paddle handle can be held in the open, free-passage position using the lock's built-in holdback function - handy for a working bee, a delivery, or any period where you want the gate to swing freely without disengaging the latch each time. If holdback is never needed, the device can be permanently removed from the lock body before installation. See passage mode vs holdback mode explained.
No batteries icon
Fully Mechanical - No Batteries, Ever
There is no power source, no wiring, and no battery to go flat on a rainy night. The keypad and latch are all purely mechanical - one of the biggest practical advantages of a mechanical digital lock on an outdoor gate.
Keypad icon
Single PIN Code Only
Like all mechanical digital locks, this lock holds one active code at a time - everyone who uses the gate shares it, and there is no audit trail of who came and went. Since a code change on this model is a bench job, plan your code-sharing discipline up front. See the honest limitations of mechanical digital locks.
Suitable for icon
Light to Medium Duty
This gate lock is built for light to medium traffic - residential gates, strata side gates, plant rooms, and service enclosures where a manageable number of people come and go each day. The forend fixing clamps to a hollow box-section post, which is a genuine structural consideration: it is the right method for gates, but it is not a commercial heavy-duty door lock.
Not suitable for icon
Not for High-Traffic Commercial Doorways
For a busy commercial entrance with constant daily cycles, choose a heavy-duty rated mechanical digital lock instead - the Borg BL7701 heavy duty or the dual-keypad Carbine CDL7200LL-KDSC-HD. Our guide to what heavy duty actually means explains cycle ratings and where the line sits.

  • Easily reversible on site to suit either hand of gate.

Forend Fixing System - How the Lock Mounts

Unlike a door lock, the BL3100BLK never needs a mortice pocket. The lock body sits on the face of the gate post and two telescopic through-bolt fixings pass right through the post, clamping the unit firmly from both sides - a front collar and sleeve assembly on the keypad side, and a rear collar fitted from the post's rear side. Standard fixings suit square posts from 30mm to 60mm. If your post sits outside that range, measure before ordering - our guide to measuring the gate stile and the forend fixing option walk through it, and the accessories table below lists the latch extensions and round post kit.

Suitable Uses

  • External aluminium and steel pedestrian gate access control in residential and strata properties.
  • Side and service gates where a compact, single-sided, keyed-in/free-out lock is the specification - see all locks rated for an external gate exposed to rain.
  • Driveway pedestrian gates where one-way code access is required and free inside egress is acceptable.
  • Applications where the holdback function is genuinely useful - working bees, deliveries, or periods of free through-traffic.
  • External gates in coastal and marine environments within the marine grade keypad's capability; for severe front-line salt exposure, step up to the MG Pro sibling.
  • Not suitable for: fire doors or any required exit path, and not for a gate where the reach-over risk of a single-sided lock is a genuine concern - the back-to-back BL3430GATE closes that gap.

Marine Grade models are finished in black powder coat with a marine grade keypad (1,000 hour salt water tested); MG Pro models carry the full Marine Grade Pro external coating. Easicode Pro (ECP) models change codes on the gate; standard models use tumbler repositioning at the bench. Combinations figure [CONFIRM]: this product's "over 8,000" comes from the newly-logged BL3000 Series Brochure, which names BL3100 specifically; the BL3150GATE/BL3175GATEK/BL3400-family rows above use the established cohort figure from the BL3400 Series Leaflet and BL3100-BL3400 Instructions (over 1,000 non-ECP, over 4,000 ECP) - the two documents were never reconciled against each other model-by-model, so this discrepancy is flagged rather than resolved silently. For help decoding Borg's model naming, see the Borg naming guide.

Accessories and Spares - Borg Gate Locks

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the forend fixing system work - do I need to cut a mortice?
No mortice, no edge drilling. The lock body sits on the face of the gate post and two telescopic fixing screws pass right through the post, clamping the unit firmly from both sides. The spring-loaded latchbolt projects from the lock body into a strike on the opposite post or frame, and its projection adjusts from 65mm to 80mm. This is exactly the fixing method our narrow gate post guide recommends when a mortice lock physically will not fit the stile.
How do I change the code on this model?
At a bench, not on the gate. The lock comes off the gate, the chamber is opened, and the code tumblers are repositioned with the supplied tweezers to set the new digits - then reassemble, test the new code several times, and refit. It is a careful 20-30 minute job the first time. The full procedure is in the bench method and Borg standard chambers. If that sounds like a chore you will face often, the Easicode Pro sibling changes codes on the gate in minutes.
What does the holdback function actually do, and can I remove it?
Holdback lets you latch the inside paddle handle in the open position so the gate can swing freely without needing to operate the latch each time - useful for deliveries or working bees. If you never want that, the holdback device unclips from the lock body before installation, leaving the handle to spring-close as normal. See passage mode vs holdback mode explained.
Can I use this lock on a pool gate?
The lock's spring-loaded latch is self-latching on gate close, and the inside handle is always free for immediate egress - both align with common pool safety self-latching and free-egress expectations. That said, this is not a compliance claim: pool barrier gates have specific requirements around gate height, clearances and the overall system, not just the lock. Confirm your setup with a licensed pool safety inspector before installing on any pool safety barrier gate - see the canonical pool barrier gate treatment.
What's the difference between this and the BL3400GATE?
Very little mechanically - both are single-sided marine grade gate locks with tumbler code change, no key override, and the same forend fixing and latch. BL3100BLK is the compact model in the family; BL3400GATE uses the same fixing method on a slightly larger, more substantial lockcase. Choose BL3400GATE if you'd prefer the more substantial lockcase; BL3100BLK if compact is the priority. Note BL3400GATE does not carry the holdback function this model has.

Additional Information

Outdoor maintenance: marine grade keypads resist salt attack, they do not exempt the lock from care. Monthly, apply a light spray of silicone-based lubricant to the keypad buttons and lever pivots and wipe off the excess; annually, have the lock serviced. The Borg Servicing Guide (PDF) covers the routine.
Plan the tumbler code change: do the first code change at the bench before the lock ever goes on the gate - it teaches you the chamber layout while everything is clean and well-lit, and confirms the tumbler set is complete. Keep the tweezers with your service kit, and if you need spare tumblers or change parts later, see code change spares explained.
Single-sided vs back-to-back: a single-sided lock like this one is code-in, free-out - simple and suits most side and service gates. If the gate can be reached from outside once someone is standing at it (a low gate, or one next to a fence someone could stand on), the free inside handle can potentially be reached over - see the single-sided problem explained. If that risk matters, the back-to-back BL3430GATE requires the code both ways.
One code, shared by everyone: plan how the code is shared and how rarely it needs to change - on this model a change is a bench job, so it suits gates where the user group is stable. If per-user codes or an audit trail are must-haves, you are shopping for an electronic lock, not a mechanical one - see the honest limitations rundown.

Borg BL3100BLK - Extended FAQ

Deeper answers for installers and anyone specifying the BL3100BLK. The quick answers are on the main page - this tab covers fixing, the tumbler code change in detail, holdback, compliance, weather, and choosing between models.

Fixing and Installation

Can I install this myself, and what tools do I need?
Yes, if you are comfortable drilling accurate holes through a metal post. You will need a drill with metal bits, a square, a tape measure, and an allen key - the two telescopic fixings pass through the post and clamp the lock from both sides, so the critical skill is drilling straight and level. Allow an hour for a first install. If you would rather hand it over, our advice and installation service can arrange a locksmith fit.
What gate post sizes does it fit?
Square posts from 30mm to 60mm on the standard fixings and latch. From 60mm up to 120mm, fit the 50mm latch extension or the XL latchbolt (part no. S311a). Round posts need the round post kit. Measure the post face width before ordering - how to measure a gate stile shows exactly where to put the tape.
My gate is hinged on the other side - is handing a problem?
No. The lock is easily reversible on site to suit either hand of gate, and the latch can be flipped to suit the swing direction. Do the reversal at the bench before mounting - the steps are in the BL3100-BL3400 installation instructions (PDF).
Can I fit it to a timber gate or a door instead of a metal gate?
The forend fixing is engineered around hollow metal box-section posts - the telescopic fixings compress against the post walls. On thick timber the through-bolt principle can still work, but the anti-climb housing and latch geometry are designed for metal gate frames, and on an actual door you are better served by a purpose-built door lock. For a busy building doorway, look at the Borg BL7701 heavy duty instead.
How does the latch adjustment work?
The spring-loaded latchbolt projection is adjustable from 65mm to 80mm, and the bolt has 20mm of withdrawal when the lever operates. Set the projection so the bolt engages the strike fully with the gate closed against its stop - too short and the gate rattles, too long and the bolt binds. The stainless steel strike is available as a spare if yours is lost or damaged.

Codes, Holdback and Everyday Use

Walk me through the tumbler code change.
Take the lock off the gate and work at a clean, well-lit bench. Remove the retaining screws and lift the cover plate carefully - there are springs beneath it. With the chamber open, use the supplied tweezers to lift each tumbler and reposition it: coded tumblers go in the button positions you want in your new code, uncoded tumblers fill the rest. Reassemble, then test the new code several times with the lock still in hand before it goes anywhere near the gate. Full detail with photos: the bench method and Borg standard chambers, plus the series instructions (PDF).
How do I engage and release the holdback?
With the latch retracted (correct code entered, or the handle already held open), the holdback device locks the inside paddle handle in the open position so the latch stays withdrawn until you release it manually. It is a mechanical hold, not a timer - the gate stays free until someone physically returns the handle to normal. If holdback is never wanted on site, remove the device from the lock body before installation rather than trying to disable it after fitting.
What if the code is forgotten or the keypad is playing up?
There is no key override on this model, so a forgotten code means a locksmith call rather than a key backup - worth factoring in if you want a fallback, in which case the BL3175GATEK or a DKO model adds one. If a keypad genuinely jams and cleaning plus lubrication does not fix it, contact Terry's Locksmiths - do not dismantle beyond the documented code change procedure or the warranty is void.
How long can the code be, and how many combinations are there really?
The Borg BL3000 Series Brochure - which names this model specifically - states over 8,000 combinations for the BL3100 chamber; the sibling BL3400/3430 tumbler models are documented separately at over 1,000. Borg codes are pressed in any order - the chamber reads which buttons are coded, not the sequence. Most sites settle on four to five digits; avoid obvious picks like unit numbers or years, since a change on this model is a bench job.

Egress, Compliance and Suitability

Is this lock fire rated or BCA compliant for egress doors?
No fire rating is claimed for this product, and it is a gate lock rather than a doorset hardware item in any case. If the opening you are securing is a building doorway with compliance requirements, you need hardware assessed for that role - the Carbine CDL7200LL-KDSC-HD is our dual-keypad heavy duty pick with documented compliance credentials. This lock belongs on gates.
Someone can reach over my gate - is a single-sided lock still worth it?
For most side and service gates, yes - it stops casual walk-in access and the reach-over trick takes real effort and height. For anywhere the reach-over risk is a genuine concern - low gates, gates next to something climbable, or higher-security applications - move up to a back-to-back model like the BL3430GATE, which needs the code from both sides. See double-sided gate locks explained.
Honestly - how secure is a mechanical keypad gate lock?
It is convenience-grade security done properly: it stops casual entry and gives simple, keyless one-way access control. It is not a high-security product - codes can be shared or observed, there is no key backup on this model, and the gate itself is usually the weaker element (most gates can be climbed). Match the lock to the threat: for a side gate or plant enclosure it is well matched; for genuinely high-value targets, layer it with other measures. Our latch vs bolt security comparison is a straight-talking read on where these locks sit.

Weather and Maintenance

Marine Grade vs Marine Grade Pro - which do I actually need?
This model's marine grade keypad (1,000 hours salt water tested) with a black powder coat housing handles normal Australian outdoor exposure, including coastal suburbs, very well. MG Pro adds Borg's full marine external coating across the lock and is the right call within the salt-spray zone - beachfront, marina, and exposed headland sites. If you are on the fence, the deciding factors are laid out in MG Pro and ECP explained.
What maintenance does an outdoor keypad lock actually need?
Little, but not none: a monthly light spray of silicone-based lubricant on the buttons and lever pivots (wipe off the excess so grit does not stick), a freshwater rinse of the keypad if you are near salt, and an annual service check of the latch engagement and fixings. The routine is in the Borg Servicing Guide (PDF). Never use graphite or oil-based products on the keypad.
Will rain or a storm stop it working?
No - there is nothing electronic to short out and no battery to fail. The lock is designed for external metal gates exposed to the weather; the mechanical chamber keeps working wet or dry. That reliability in weather is a core reason gate installers keep choosing mechanical digital locks over battery keypads for gates.

Choosing Between Models

Why would I pay more for a different model in this family?
The BL3150GATE adds a second keypad for back-to-back code control; the BL3175GATEK adds both back-to-back keypads and a key override; the BL3400MGPROECP steps up to Easicode Pro on-gate code changes and the full MG Pro coating. If none of that matters to your gate, BL3100BLK is the simplest and most compact way into the family.
What if this style of gate lock is not quite right for my gate?
Borg makes gate locks in other formats: the BL2615MGPROECP horizontal rim deadbolt suits gates needing a deadbolt rather than a latch, and the heavier Borg BL7701 suits busy commercial doorways rather than gates. If your gate currently relies on a magnetic latch, read why magnetic gate latches can be problematic before combining one with any keypad lock.

How to Make a Claim

For full returns and warranty claim procedures, visit our Returns & Warranty page - this is kept up to date and is the authoritative reference for current claim steps.
  1. Contact Terry's Tradies Pty Ltd first if you purchased through us or one of its associated trading names - we will assess the issue and manage the warranty process with LSC on your behalf. You do not need to contact LSC or Borg Locks UK directly.
  2. Have your proof of purchase ready (receipt or order confirmation).
  3. Warranty claims for Borg products in Australia are processed through LSC, the authorised Australian importer and distributor. Where an item is returned to LSC, freight charges must be prepaid and the item returned within the warranty period.
  4. If LSC finds the returned item to be defective, it will be repaired or replaced, and a detailed assessment report is provided to the customer after examination.
Australian Consumer Law
Our goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. You are entitled to a replacement or refund for a major failure and compensation for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. You are also entitled to have the goods repaired or replaced if the goods fail to be of acceptable quality and the failure does not amount to a major failure. The Borg manufacturer warranty above operates alongside - and does not limit - these statutory rights.
