Borg BL3150 Mechanical Digital Gate Lock - Back-to-Back Keypads - Marine Grade - Black

At A Glance

At A Glance
PIN code both sidesPIN Code (Both Sides)

The Borg BL3150GATE is a fully mechanical, back-to-back keypad gate lock from Borg's purpose-built gate lock family - it clamps to the face of a metal box-section gate post with no mortice cutting, and carries a full lever keypad on both sides of the gate. The correct PIN is required to operate the gate from either side, and each keypad can be independently recoded to a different combination if required.

Because both faces carry a keypad, this is a code-in, code-out lock - there is no free inside handle, so anyone leaving the gate must know the code the same as anyone entering. That closes the reach-over risk that a single-sided gate lock can carry, at the cost of always needing the code to exit. There are no batteries, no wiring, and nothing to charge - both keypads and the latch are entirely mechanical, with codes set by repositioning the supplied tumblers at a bench.

The marine grade keypads are tested to 1,000 hours of salt water exposure, the spring-loaded latch bolt adjusts from 65mm to 80mm of projection with 20mm of bolt withdrawal, and the lock is reversible on site to suit either hand of gate. Browse the full Digital Mechanical Locks range for every battery-free keypad lock we stock.

Marine Grade Keypads - 1,000 Hour Salt Water Tested
Both keypads are marine grade quality, tested to 1,000 hours of salt water exposure, with the housing finished in black powder coat - good protection for coastal and outdoor Australian conditions. For severe, front-line coastal exposure, step up to the BL3430MGPROECP, which carries Borg's full Marine Grade Pro external coating - the grades are unpacked in MG Pro and ECP explained.

Code Changes Are a Bench Job on This Model
This is a standard-chamber Borg lock: changing either PIN means taking the lock off the gate and repositioning the code tumblers at a bench using the supplied tweezers - and with two keypads, it's a job to repeat on each side. It is entirely doable - the process is covered step by step in the bench method and Borg standard chambers - but if codes will rotate often, the Easicode Pro sibling changes codes on the gate in a couple of minutes.
Back-to-back keypads icon
Back-to-Back Keypads - Code Required from Both Sides
Both faces of the gate carry a full keypad operating on the same PIN code by default, so the gate cannot be opened from either side without it - each keypad can also be independently recoded if different combinations are wanted per side. On a gate this matters more than on a door: a single-sided gate lock can often be defeated by simply reaching over the gate to a free inside handle. Our guide to double-sided gate locks covers exactly why back-to-back is the right call on most secure gates.
Caution icon
Code Required to Exit - No Free Egress, Not for Fire or Egress Doors, Not for Pool Barrier Gates
Both keypads require the correct PIN before the lever will operate, including from inside the gate. That makes this lock unsuitable for any fire door, required exit path, or emergency egress route - see why exit paths need free egress. It is also not suitable for pool safety barrier gates, where a code-to-exit lock conflicts with the barrier's compliance requirements - the pool barrier gate rules explain what is and is not allowed. Confirm compliance with your certifier before installing on any regulated gate or door.
No batteries icon
Fully Mechanical - No Batteries, Ever
There is no power source, no wiring, and no battery to go flat on a rainy night. Both keypads and the latch are all purely mechanical - one of the biggest practical advantages of a mechanical digital lock on an outdoor gate.
Keypad icon
One Active Code per Keypad
Like all mechanical digital locks, each keypad holds one active code at a time - everyone who uses that side shares it, and there is no audit trail of who came and went. Since a code change on this model is a bench job on each keypad, plan your code-sharing discipline up front - or step up to the ECP sibling if you expect frequent rotation. See the honest limitations of mechanical digital locks.
Suitable for icon
Light to Medium Duty
This gate lock is built for light to medium traffic - plant rooms, utility enclosures, strata side gates, and secure storage areas where a manageable number of people come and go each day. The forend fixing clamps to a hollow box-section post, which is a genuine structural consideration: it is the right method for gates, but it is not a commercial heavy-duty door lock.
Not suitable for icon
Not for High-Traffic Commercial Doorways
For a busy commercial entrance with constant daily cycles, choose a heavy-duty rated mechanical digital lock instead - the Borg BL7701 heavy duty or the dual-keypad Carbine CDL7200LL-KDSC-HD. Our guide to what heavy duty actually means explains cycle ratings and where the line sits.

Want a Key Backup or Faster Code Changes?
Two separate upgrade paths from this exact back-to-back body: the BL3175GATEK adds a euro cylinder key override (not supplied) for emergency access without the code, while stepping up to the BL3430MGPROECP gets you Easicode Pro on-gate code changes and the full MG Pro coating - there is no Easicode Pro version of this exact compact body, so faster code changes mean moving to the 3430 platform.

Key Features

  • Back-to-back keypads - the same PIN code is required to enter and to exit the gate by default; each side can be independently recoded.
  • Clutching levers both sides - free-turning until the correct code is entered on that side.
  • No key override - PIN code only, on both faces.
  • Marine grade keypads, tested to 1,000 hours of salt water exposure; black powder coat housing.
  • Over 1,000 code combinations per keypad; code set by repositioning the supplied tumblers.
  • Forend fixing system - through-bolts to the face of the gate post with two telescopic fixings, no mortice cutting or edge drilling.
  • Anti-climb housing design.
  • Spring-loaded latch bolt, adjustable from 65mm to 80mm projection, with 20mm bolt withdrawal.
  • Security fixings included.
  • Suits square gate posts from 30mm to 60mm as standard; XL latchbolt (part no. S311a) available separately for posts up to 120mm.
  • Fully mechanical - no batteries, no wiring, no power.
  • Easily reversible on site to suit either hand of gate.

Forend Fixing System - How the Lock Mounts

Unlike a door lock, the BL3150GATE never needs a mortice pocket. The lock body sits on the face of the gate post and two telescopic through-bolt fixings pass right through the post, clamping the unit firmly from both sides - a front collar and sleeve assembly on the outer keypad side, and a rear collar fitted from the post's rear side. Standard fixings suit square posts from 30mm to 60mm. If your post sits outside that range, measure before ordering - our guide to measuring the gate stile and the forend fixing option walk through it, and the accessories table below lists the latch extensions and round post kit.

Suitable Uses

  • Secure external gates where the code must work both ways - back-to-back keypads defeat the reach-over trick that undoes single-sided gate locks.
  • Plant rooms, pump enclosures, and restricted-access service gates where controlled entry and exit both matter.
  • Coastal and outdoor gates within the marine grade keypads' capability - see all locks rated for an external gate exposed to rain; for severe front-line salt exposure, step up to the MG Pro sibling.
  • Applications where different codes on each side are wanted for different user groups.
  • Strata, body corporate, and managed-property side gates with stable codes, where the reach-over risk of a single-sided lock is a genuine concern.
  • Not suitable for: pool safety barrier gates (see the canonical pool barrier treatment), fire doors, or any required exit path - the code-to-exit design conflicts with free-egress requirements.

Marine Grade models are finished in black powder coat with marine grade keypads (1,000 hour salt water tested); MG Pro models carry the full Marine Grade Pro external coating. Easicode Pro (ECP) models change codes on the gate; standard models use tumbler repositioning at the bench. Combinations figure [CONFIRM]: BL3100BLK's "over 8,000" comes from the newly-logged BL3000 Series Brochure, which names its model as BL3100 exactly. That same brochure also names a back-to-back model - but calls it BL3130, not BL3150 - so its figures are NOT applied to this row; this product keeps the established cohort figure from the BL3400 Series Leaflet and BL3100-BL3400 Instructions. Whether BL3130 and BL3150 are the same product under different Borg model numbering is flagged for Jim to confirm, not assumed. For help decoding Borg's model naming, see the Borg naming guide.

Accessories and Spares - Borg Gate Locks

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the forend fixing system work - do I need to cut a mortice?
No mortice, no edge drilling. The lock body sits on the face of the gate post and the two telescopic fixing screws pass right through the post, clamping the unit firmly from both sides. The spring-loaded latchbolt projects from the lock body into a strike on the opposite post or frame, and its projection adjusts from 65mm to 80mm. This is exactly the fixing method our narrow gate post guide recommends when a mortice lock physically will not fit the stile.
How do I change the code on this model?
At a bench, not on the gate - and it's a separate job on each keypad. The lock comes off the gate, each chamber is opened, and the code tumblers are repositioned with the supplied tweezers to set the new digits - then reassemble, test each new code several times, and refit. Budget roughly double the bench time of a single-sided model. The full procedure is in the bench method and Borg standard chambers. If that sounds like a chore you will face often, the Easicode Pro sibling changes codes on the gate in minutes.
Can I use this lock on a pool gate?
No - not on a pool safety barrier gate. This lock requires a code to exit on both sides, which conflicts with pool barrier compliance requirements. Pool barrier gates need a compliant self-closing, self-latching arrangement, and the rules around what locks are permitted are specific - read the canonical pool barrier gate treatment and confirm any pool gate setup with a licensed pool safety inspector. For pool equipment enclosures and plant gates that are not part of the safety barrier itself, this lock is fine.
Do I really have to enter the code to get out?
Yes - both keypads run their own code and the inside lever will not operate without it. That is the point of back-to-back on a gate: a single-sided gate lock can often be defeated by reaching over the top to a free inside handle. If you want code-in but free-handle-out instead, the single-sided BL3100BLK is the compact version of the same platform without the inside keypad. Never fit a code-to-exit lock on a required exit path - see exit paths explained.
What's the difference between this and the BL3430GATE?
Very little mechanically - both are back-to-back marine grade gate locks with tumbler code change and no key override. BL3150GATE is the compact model in the family; BL3430GATE uses the same forend fixing on a slightly larger, more substantial lockcase. Choose BL3430GATE if you'd prefer the more substantial lockcase; BL3150GATE if compact is the priority.

Additional Information

Outdoor maintenance: marine grade keypads resist salt attack, they do not exempt the lock from care. Monthly, apply a light spray of silicone-based lubricant to both keypads' buttons and lever pivots and wipe off the excess; annually, have the lock serviced. The Borg Servicing Guide (PDF) covers the routine.
Plan the tumbler code change: do the first code change on both keypads at the bench before the lock ever goes on the gate - it teaches you the chamber layout while everything is clean and well-lit, and confirms each tumbler set is complete. Keep the tweezers with your service kit, and if you need spare tumblers or change parts later, see code change spares explained.
Why back-to-back matters on gates: most gates can be reached over. A single-sided lock with a free inside handle secures nothing against anyone tall enough to reach the far side - the single-sided problem explained. Back-to-back closes that hole, at the cost of code-to-exit - a trade you should make deliberately.
Different codes on each side: each keypad has its own coding chamber, so you can genuinely set a different PIN on the outside face than the inside face if different user groups need different access - useful where a plant room's outside code is shared more widely than its inside code. Just be careful not to lock yourself out by forgetting which side has which code.

Borg BL3150GATE - Extended FAQ

Deeper answers for installers and anyone specifying the BL3150GATE. The quick answers are on the main page - this tab covers fixing, the tumbler code change in detail, egress and compliance, weather, and choosing between models.

Fixing and Installation

Can I install this myself, and what tools do I need?
Yes, if you are comfortable drilling accurate holes through a metal post. You will need a drill with metal bits, a square, a tape measure, and an allen key - the two telescopic fixings pass through the post and clamp the lock from both sides, so the critical skill is drilling straight and level. Allow a bit longer than a single-sided install since there are two keypad units to fit and align. If you would rather hand it over, our advice and installation service can arrange a locksmith fit.
What gate post sizes does it fit?
Square posts from 30mm to 60mm on the standard fixings and latch. From 60mm up to 120mm, fit the 50mm latch extension or the XL latchbolt (part no. S311a). Round posts need the round post kit. Measure the post face width before ordering - how to measure a gate stile shows exactly where to put the tape.
My gate is hinged on the other side - is handing a problem?
No. The lock is easily reversible on site to suit either hand of gate, and the latch can be flipped to suit the swing direction. Do the reversal at the bench before mounting - the steps are in the BL3100-BL3400 installation instructions (PDF).
How does the latch adjustment work?
The spring-loaded latchbolt projection is adjustable from 65mm to 80mm, and the bolt has 20mm of withdrawal when either lever operates. Set the projection so the bolt engages the strike fully with the gate closed against its stop - too short and the gate rattles, too long and the bolt binds. The stainless steel strike is available as a spare if yours is lost or damaged.

Codes and the Tumbler Code Change

Walk me through the tumbler code change.
Take the lock off the gate and work at a clean, well-lit bench. Remove the retaining screws and lift the cover plate carefully - there are springs beneath it. With the chamber open, use the supplied tweezers to lift each tumbler and reposition it: coded tumblers go in the button positions you want in your new code, uncoded tumblers fill the rest. Reassemble, then test the new code several times with the lock still in hand before it goes anywhere near the gate. Full detail with photos: the bench method and Borg standard chambers, plus the series instructions (PDF).
Do both keypads change together, or do I set each one?
Each keypad unit has its own chamber, so a code change means doing the tumbler procedure on both units separately. They can carry the same code, or different codes if you want each side controlled independently. Budget roughly double the bench time of a single-sided model.
What if the code is forgotten or a keypad is playing up?
There is no key override on this model, so a forgotten code means a locksmith call rather than a key backup - if that matters, the BL3175GATEK adds one on the same body. If a keypad genuinely jams and cleaning plus lubrication does not fix it, contact Terry's Locksmiths - do not dismantle beyond the documented code change procedure or the warranty is void.
How long can each code be?
The mechanical chamber gives over 1,000 possible combinations per keypad, and buttons are pressed in any order - the chamber reads which buttons are coded, not the sequence. Longer codes are more secure but slower at the gate; most sites settle on four to five digits. Avoid obvious picks (unit numbers, years) - since a change is a bench job on both sides, choose codes you can live with for a while.

Egress, Compliance and Suitability

Is this lock fire rated or BCA compliant for egress doors?
No fire rating is claimed for this product, and its code-to-exit design is fundamentally incompatible with fire doors and required exits regardless. If the opening you are securing is a building doorway with compliance requirements, you need hardware assessed for that role - the Carbine CDL7200LL-KDSC-HD is our dual-keypad heavy duty pick with documented compliance credentials. This lock belongs on gates.
We have a shared gate between properties - any special considerations?
Shared and common-property gates need everyone on the arrangement to know both the outside and inside code, since both are required to move through the gate. Put the rules in writing (body corporate minutes work well) before the lock goes on - our guide to shared gates and access modes covers the common arrangements.
Honestly - how secure is a mechanical keypad gate lock?
It is convenience-grade security done properly: it stops casual entry, defeats the reach-over trick, and requiring the code from both sides is a genuine step up from a single-sided lock. It is not a high-security product - codes can be shared or observed, there is no key backup on this model, and the gate itself is usually the weaker element (most gates can be climbed). Match the lock to the threat: for a side gate or plant enclosure it is well matched; for genuinely high-value targets, layer it with other measures. Our latch vs bolt security comparison is a straight-talking read on where these locks sit.

Weather and Maintenance

Marine Grade vs Marine Grade Pro - which do I actually need?
This model's marine grade keypads (1,000 hours salt water tested) with a black powder coat housing handle normal Australian outdoor exposure, including coastal suburbs, very well. MG Pro adds Borg's full marine external coating across the lock and is the right call within the salt-spray zone - beachfront, marina, and exposed headland sites. If you are on the fence, the deciding factors are laid out in MG Pro and ECP explained.
What maintenance does an outdoor keypad lock actually need?
Little, but not none: a monthly light spray of silicone-based lubricant on both keypads' buttons and lever pivots (wipe off the excess so grit does not stick), a freshwater rinse if you are near salt, and an annual service check of the latch engagement and fixings. The routine is in the Borg Servicing Guide (PDF). Never use graphite or oil-based products on the keypads.
Will rain or a storm stop it working?
No - there is nothing electronic to short out and no battery to fail. The lock is designed for external metal gates exposed to the weather; the mechanical chambers keep working wet or dry. That reliability in weather is a core reason gate installers keep choosing mechanical digital locks over battery keypads for gates.

Choosing Between Models

Why would I pay more for a different model in this family?
The BL3175GATEK adds a key override on the same back-to-back body; the BL3430GATE steps up to a larger lockcase; the BL3430MGPROECP adds Easicode Pro on-gate code changes and the full MG Pro coating. If none of that matters to your gate, BL3150GATE is the simplest way into back-to-back control.
What if this style of gate lock is not quite right for my gate?
Borg makes gate locks in other formats: the BL2615MGPROECP horizontal rim deadbolt suits gates needing a deadbolt rather than a latch, and the heavier Borg BL7701 suits busy commercial doorways rather than gates. If your gate currently relies on a magnetic latch, read why magnetic gate latches can be problematic before combining one with any keypad lock.

How to Make a Claim

For full returns and warranty claim procedures, visit our Returns & Warranty page - this is kept up to date and is the authoritative reference for current claim steps.
  1. Contact Terry's Tradies Pty Ltd first if you purchased through us or one of its associated trading names - we will assess the issue and manage the warranty process with LSC on your behalf. You do not need to contact LSC or Borg Locks UK directly.
  2. Have your proof of purchase ready (receipt or order confirmation).
  3. Warranty claims for Borg products in Australia are processed through LSC, the authorised Australian importer and distributor. Where an item is returned to LSC, freight charges must be prepaid and the item returned within the warranty period.
  4. If LSC finds the returned item to be defective, it will be repaired or replaced, and a detailed assessment report is provided to the customer after examination.
Australian Consumer Law
Our goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. You are entitled to a replacement or refund for a major failure and compensation for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. You are also entitled to have the goods repaired or replaced if the goods fail to be of acceptable quality and the failure does not amount to a major failure. The Borg manufacturer warranty above operates alongside - and does not limit - these statutory rights.
