McGrath G3 Ethernet Gateway - PoE & Type-C USB

The McGrath G3 Gateway is a wired Ethernet bridge that connects compatible McGrath smart locks to your network infrastructure via an RJ45 connection. It enables secure remote management through the McGrath Locks App, and is aimed at commercial installations where structured cabling and PoE switching are already in place.

This is not a lock. The G3 does not provide any mechanical security and does not store user credentials independently. It acts purely as a communication bridge between Bluetooth-enabled McGrath devices and your Ethernet network.

The G3 supports both Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) and Type-C USB power input, making it well suited to structured-cabling sites. For a plain-English explanation of what a gateway does, see Chapter 08 - Gateway Comparison.

Estimated Warehouse Dispatch
Usually same day if ordered before 11am AEST (excluding weekends and QLD public holidays).

Key Features

  • RJ45 Ethernet (wired) network connection.
  • Supports Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) or Type-C USB power.
  • Recommended lock range of approximately 10-15 metres (environment dependent).
  • Supports 100+ compatible locks per gateway.
  • Mesh networking capability between multiple gateways.
  • Wall or ceiling mountable.
  • IP54-rated housing.
  • Managed through the McGrath Locks App on iOS and Android.

How the G3 Gateway Works

The G3 connects directly to your network via RJ45 Ethernet and communicates with compatible McGrath locks over Bluetooth. When you issue a remote command in the McGrath Locks App, the instruction travels over the internet to the gateway, which then relays it locally to the lock over Bluetooth. The gateway does not perform any locking function itself - it acts purely as a secure communication bridge between your network and the lock. This is the same Bluetooth-plus-gateway model used across the TTLock platform.

Internet or Power Interruption
Remote features rely on the gateway having both power (PoE or USB) and an active internet connection. If either drops, the lock still works normally in person and over local Bluetooth - only remote access is paused until the connection is restored. See what happens when the internet goes down.

App Platform & Data Hosting

App Platform & Data Hosting
The G3 is managed through the McGrath Locks App - a customised, McGrath-branded platform available on iOS and Android.iOS App StoreAndroid Google Play The platform is managed, supported and distributed locally in Australia, with Australian staff handling warranty, troubleshooting and account queries. The underlying cloud infrastructure is provided by TTLock, a globally deployed IoT platform. To see where the app fits across brands, read Chapter 15 - Smart Lock App Platforms and the which app platform is right for you guide.

Compatible McGrath Locks & Devices

The G3 adds remote access to Bluetooth-enabled McGrath locks and controllers listed as gateway-optional. Commonly paired devices include:

Confirm compatibility first
Not every McGrath device requires or supports a gateway - some controllers include built-in Wi-Fi. Confirm your specific model is gateway-optional before ordering. For the platform-wide rules on when a gateway is needed, see the gateway selection guidance in Chapter 14.

Available Finish Options

Accessories & Spares

Accessory Item Code Purpose
McGrath 240V Wall Adaptor with Dual USB MLWA240USB 240V mains adaptor with two USB ports; powers the gateway from a wall socket when PoE is not used. Suits G2, G3 and G4.

Suitable Uses

  • Commercial and multi-tenant sites with structured Ethernet cabling and PoE switching.
  • Installations where a wired, always-on network link is preferred over Wi-Fi.
  • Locations with weak or congested Wi-Fi where a hardwired gateway is more reliable - see placement guidance.
  • Managed access across many doors - up to 100+ devices per gateway, with mesh linking for larger coverage; supports PMS integration for automated access.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a Wi-Fi gateway?
No. The G3 is a wired Ethernet (RJ45) gateway. For Wi-Fi, the G4 (2.4GHz, with 4G SIM option) or the dual-band G5 (2.4GHz + 5GHz) are the Wi-Fi options in the range.
Does it need PoE?
No. The G3 can be powered by Power-over-Ethernet or by Type-C USB. PoE is convenient on structured-cabling sites, but a USB power source works equally well.
Is this a lock?
No. The G3 is a network bridge only - it has no locking hardware and stores no user credentials. It relays commands between the app and your McGrath lock.
How close does it need to be to the lock?
Around 10-15 metres, depending on walls and interference. See the gateway placement guidance in Chapter 08.
What happens if the internet or power drops?
The lock still works in person and over local Bluetooth. Only remote (off-site) app control is paused until the connection returns.
Which app do I use?
The McGrath Locks App on iOS and Android.iOS App StoreAndroid Google Play It is a McGrath-branded platform, supported locally in Australia, running on TTLock cloud infrastructure. For day-to-day tips, see TTLock tips and tricks.

Additional Information

  • A gateway is only needed for remote (off-site) control. If a lock is only ever operated in person or over local Bluetooth, a gateway is optional - see do you really need Wi-Fi.
  • The G3 is the wired choice for commercial sites; the G4 suits sites with no fixed internet (4G SIM), and the G5 suits modern dual-band Wi-Fi routers.
  • The IP54-rated housing gives basic dust and splash resistance, but the gateway is intended for sheltered indoor mounting, not full outdoor exposure.
  • For a commercial-grade alternative on other platforms, compare the Lockton E-Series G2 gateway (TTLock, Wi-Fi) or the KAS S1 access-control gateway (BLE + Sub-GHz, PoE).
  • Terry's supplies McGrath through LSC, giving local warranty and support - see why that matters for long-term confidence.
Compare McGrath Gateway Models
McGrath gateways differ in network type (Wi-Fi or Ethernet), power options and generation features. To determine which gateway suits your installation, read the detailed comparison guide: Differences Between McGrath G2, G3, G4 and G5 Gateways.

What's In The Box - McGrath G3 Ethernet Gateway

  • 1 x McGrath G3 Ethernet Gateway
  • 1 x USB-C cable
The gateway is a bridge only - your compatible McGrath lock is purchased separately. On PoE sites the gateway can draw power directly from the Ethernet cable; otherwise use a USB power source such as the MLWA240USB wall adaptor.
