Keyin-L Fire Rated Mortice Smartlock
The Keyin-L is a full-mortice smart lock with an integrated full-height pull handle — a single unit that replaces both the pull handle and the lock body on a new timber entry door. It is fire rated for two hours to Australian Standard AS1905.1-2015 and supports up to six access methods: capacitive PIN keypad, fingerprint reader, RFID card or fob, Bluetooth app, mechanical key override, and temporary PIN codes issued remotely via the Keyin Plus app. For a practical overview of how these access methods compare, see Chapter 03 — Access Methods: Side-by-Side Comparison.
Unlike push-pull smart locks mounted over existing hardware, the Keyin-L is built into the door mortice and the pull handle furniture is part of the lock body. This combined approach reduces door hardware cost and simplifies installation on new builds. A roller bolt or roller catch is recommended alongside the Keyin-L so the door latches closed when unlocked — the lock's motorised deadbolt controls security independently. For a detailed overview of how fire-rated smart locks are tested and certified, see our Buyer's Guide Chapter 05 — Fire Door Smart Locks.
The 4th-generation exterior panel uses a motionless design — there is no lever action on the outside face. The illuminated capacitive touchpad and fingerprint reader sit behind a slim gloss panel in a Black/Gold two-tone finish. The interior module houses the battery compartment, emergency power input, and inner forced-lockdown switch. App management is handled through the Keyin Plus platform (Android 8.0+ and iOS 13.0+).
Traditional smart lock installations often require a separate architectural pull handle or push/pull furniture, which can add several hundred dollars to the door hardware cost. The Keyin-L integrates the smart lock and the full-height entrance pull handle into a single unit — an efficient solution for fresh-fit on a new timber door. Pairing it with a fire-rated roller bolt such as the dormakaba RB111 provides optimal day-to-day door function while the electronic deadbolt controls access.

Suitable Uses
Fire Door Compliance
The Keyin-L mortice body is fire rated for two hours in accordance with Australian Standard AS1905.1-2015 (Components for the Protection of Openings in Fire-Resistant Walls and Floors — Door Sets). This makes it suitable for fire-rated timber entry doors in residential and low-rise applications. For certification context and to view fire test reports for smart locks available in Australia, see Fire-Rated Smart Lock Certification — AS1905.1 Test Reports. For an explanation of door core types (E-Core, Firecore, Pyropanel) and how they affect lock selection, see Chapter 05 — Fire Door Core Types and Fire Door Types and Smart Lock Certification. For QLD-specific compliance considerations including strata and body corporate requirements, see Chapter 11 — QLD Considerations. Before drilling any fire door, read our guide to asbestos risk in Gold Coast apartment fire doors. Always confirm fire door specification with your building certifier or certifying authority before specifying a lock — body corporate and strata managers may have additional requirements. See also our Buyer's Guide Chapter 05 — Fire Door Smart Locks for a full treatment of compliance, the one-penetration principle, and approved products.

Keyin Plus App
The Keyin-L is managed through the Keyin Plus app, available on iOS 13.0 or later and Android 8.0 or later. ![]()

Within Bluetooth range, the app provides lock/unlock, geofencing-triggered auto-unlock (Smart Pass), temporary PIN code issuance, and access history. With a compatible WiFi bridge, remote access, live status updates, and remote key grant are also available — confirm bridge availability with Terry's before ordering. For guidance on whether a gateway adds genuine value for your situation, see Chapter 08 — Gateway Comparison (band-steering issues) and our blog on why smart locks drop off WiFi and how to fix it.
The legacy product listing also referenced future Alexa, SmartThings, and Apple Home integration. Confirm current smart home platform status with Terry's before relying on these integrations for your installation. For a comparison of smart lock app platforms and help choosing the right one for your situation, see Chapter 15 — Choosing Your App Platform, Which Smart Lock Platform Is Right for You — Residential, and the fire door platform considerations.
Battery and Power
The Keyin-L is powered by 4 x AA alkaline batteries. Expected battery life is approximately 12 months at 10 uses per day. Use quality alkaline batteries — avoid rechargeable NiMH cells, which have a lower voltage output that can cause erratic behaviour in smart locks. For battery management tips across smart lock platforms, see The Realities of Electronic Door Locks — Battery Life.
If batteries are completely flat, a standard 9V battery pressed against the external power contacts on the keypad panel will provide enough power to enter a PIN and retract the bolt. This gives you entry to replace the internal batteries. The lock issues a low-battery warning audibly and via app before failure — do not ignore it. See Mechanical Key Override — What to do when the battery dies.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Keyin-L is fire rated to AS1905.1-2015 (2-hour), making it technically compliant for fire-rated timber door sets. However, fire door applications in strata or apartment buildings involve additional considerations: body corporate approval, the one-penetration principle (Queensland), and the specific door leaf and frame certification. See our guide to Apartment Fire Doors — the one-penetration rule, Secondary Locks and the One-Penetration Principle, and Chapter 05 — Strata Fire Door Checklist for detail. Confirm with your certifier before proceeding.
Yes. The Keyin-L accommodates doors from 40 to 100 mm thick. However, doors 60 mm and above require an additional fitting part. Confirm this requirement and the part with Terry's before ordering for thick-door applications. It is also important to confirm your door's backset before ordering — the standard backset is 70 mm. See Chapter 02 — Measuring Your Backset and Chapter 02 — Door Thickness for measurement guidance, and our blog on how to measure a lock backset.
No — the Keyin Plus app works within Bluetooth range without any bridge. Geofencing, Smart Pass auto-unlock, temporary PIN issuance, and access history are all available via Bluetooth. A WiFi bridge is needed only if you want remote access (lock/unlock from anywhere) or live status updates when you are away from the property. Confirm bridge availability with Terry's. For a broader discussion of when a gateway adds genuine value versus when Bluetooth-only is sufficient, see Chapter 08 — What a Gateway Does and our blog on why smart locks drop off WiFi.
The anti-peep (also called scramble code) feature allows you to enter extra digits before or after your actual PIN without affecting the unlock. For example, if your PIN is 1234, you could enter 9912346 and the lock will still recognise the correct PIN sequence within the string. This prevents anyone watching you enter the code from learning your actual PIN. See Chapter 03 — Access Methods (PIN section) for more on PIN security features.
Press a fresh 9V battery against the external power contacts on the keypad panel. This provides enough temporary power to enter your PIN and retract the deadbolt. Once inside, replace the four AA batteries in the interior module. The lock will warn you well in advance — pay attention to low-battery alerts in the Keyin Plus app and the audible warning tones at the keypad. See also Mechanical Key Override — What to do when the battery dies for the full options.
Additional Information
The Keyin-L is best suited to new builds or complete door furniture replacements where the door is being prepped from scratch. Because the lock integrates the pull handle, retrofitting it onto a door that already has a separate handle means removing the existing handle furniture and potentially re-routing the mortice pocket. This is a locksmith job, not a DIY retrofit. For doors that already have a smart lock mortice prep and separate pull handle, a mortice-format smart lock with separate handle furniture is more practical — consider the Hafele DL8800 or dormakaba M5 BLE. See Terry's Site Survey and Installation Services if you want professional supply-and-fit, Chapter 12 — Common Installation Mistakes for guidance on avoiding common errors, and our blog on 3 common DIY smart lock installation mistakes.
The Keyin-L's motorised deadbolt is the security element, but it does not latch the door closed passively the way a traditional spring latch does. A roller bolt or roller catch fitted to the door stile keeps the door resting closed when the deadbolt is retracted (unlocked state), preventing drafts and maintaining door alignment. Without a roller bolt, an unlocked door may drift open under wind pressure or air pressure differentials. The dormakaba RB111 Heavy Duty Fire-Rated Roller Bolt is stocked by Terry's and is suitable for fire door installations alongside the Keyin-L. See also Realities of Electronic Door Locks — Door Alignment.
Keyin is a relatively new brand in the Australian smart lock market. Unlike established TTLock-based platforms (see Chapter 14 — What is TTLock?) or platforms like Yale or Igloohome with deep Australian distribution networks, Keyin's platform and accessory ecosystem should be confirmed with Terry's before purchase — particularly for remote access via bridge, and smart home integrations (Alexa, SmartThings, Apple Home). The lock's core Bluetooth and credential functions are standalone and do not depend on cloud connectivity. For a broader comparison of smart lock platforms, see Chapter 15 — Choosing Your Platform and five questions that decide your platform choice. For a brand profile overview, see Chapter 10 — Brand Profiles.
Smart locks are electromechanical devices. The Keyin-L's expected lifespan depends on installation quality, use frequency, and maintenance. For an honest overview of what affects how long digital door locks last in Australian conditions — including Queensland's heat and coastal environment — see How Long Do Digital Door Locks Last — Coastal Environment, Installation Quality and Lifespan, and The Realities of Electronic Door Locks — What Actually Fails.
