The HID iCLASS SE U90 Long Range UHF Reader (RDRSEU9089) is a long range access control reader from HID for gated and monitored vehicle entry. It reads a UHF card fixed inside the windscreen from up to 5 metres away, so a driver can roll up to the gate without stopping to present a card.
It is a reader, not a gate controller. It must be wired to an access control panel over Wiegand or OSDP and fed from a 12 or 24 V DC supply - the panel decides who gets in and signals the gate. The U90's own three relays are for lights and sounders only. See the reader-only note below.
The U90 reads UHF credentials only - it does not read the cards and fobs used at doors. The housing is IP65 rated for outdoor mounting and works from -35 to 65 deg C. HID makes the U90 for more than one regional radio band, so contact us before you order and we will confirm the reader we supply suits your site and your UHF cards.
Usually ships same day if ordered before 11am AEST (excludes weekends and Queensland public holidays).
The U90 holds no users and does not decide who gets in. It passes each UHF card to an access control panel, and the panel signals the boom gate, sliding gate or roller door controller. Its three relays are for external lights and sounders, and HID states they are not to be used for access control. You also need a 12 or 24 V DC supply that can source at least 2 A, the cable run back to the panel, UHF credentials and mounting hardware - none of these are in the box. Not sure what your gate needs? Ask for a locksmith recommendation or book a site survey.
Access Methods
The U90 has one job: reading a UHF card on a vehicle windscreen as the vehicle approaches a gate. It does not read door cards, and it has no keypad.
Lane Planning and Read Range
Read range with a UHF reader comes from the installation as much as the reader. HID's aim is a lane where the reader sees the vehicle at the gate - and not the one behind it or in the next lane - so that a driver can pass at a rolling stop.
- Fix the card holder at least 5 cm (2 inches) in from the edge of the windscreen.
- Some vehicles have a conductive tinted band across the top of the windscreen. Fit the holder at least 5 cm below it. Non-conductive tint does not affect performance.
- Tinted or heated windscreens can reduce read range - check the vehicle manual.
- Do not use a reflective sun shade while the card is in its holder. The heat trapped behind it can damage the card.
Key Features
- Long range reading - up to 5 m, for hands-free entry at vehicle gates. See Lane Planning and Read Range.
- Secure UHF credentials - reads UHF cards that carry HID's Secure Identity Object (SIO), which adds encryption and binds the data to the card to inhibit cloning.
- SIO and EPC output - the reader can report the secure SIO data, the card's EPC number or both, which helps where an older EPC-based system is in place.
- Wiegand or OSDP - connects to the panel over Wiegand, which is the default, or over OSDP on RS-485, selected in the reader's settings.
- Configured from a web browser - an Ethernet port and a built-in web interface give access to every setting, with no special software.
- Autotune - the reader tunes itself to its surroundings at set-up, on demand.
- Three indicator relays for external lights and sounders, rated 30 V DC at 2 A.
- Hold input and anti-passback timer - in its default Parking Hold setting the reader polls for cards only while the hold line is released, and an anti-passback timer is set to 5 seconds by default.
- IP65 rated rugged polycarbonate housing for outdoor mounting, with a supplied back box and gasket.
- Standard mounting - drill points for 75, 100 and 200 mm VESA brackets and for wall boxes, so no custom hardware is needed.
- Keys held in secure hardware - an EAL5+ certified crypto processor.

- Sites that want the same HID security model at the gate as at the door, using SIO-enabled UHF cards.
Pedestrian doors - HID makes the U90 for gated or monitored parking and states it is not intended for other applications; for doors see the HID iCLASS SE R15 or the rest of the HID range, and for a pedestrian gate lock see our outdoor gate lock range. Switching a gate directly - the U90's relays are not to be used for access control; the panel signals the gate. Reading the Seos, iCLASS, MIFARE or 125 kHz cards used at doors - it reads UHF credentials only. Lanes where the reader cannot be placed within about 2 m of the gate, or where it would face a reflecting surface.

STK RDRSEU9089
Finish selection does not affect functionality, compliance, or performance. HID makes the iCLASS SE U90 in black only.
HID iCLASS SE Readers
The U90 is the vehicle reader in the iCLASS SE family. The other two iCLASS SE readers we list are for doors.
This product is the bold row. The U90 reads UHF cards at a distance; the R15 and RKLB40 read 13.56 MHz cards at a few centimetres. A site can use both - a UHF reader at the gate and card readers at the doors. Browse the rest of the HID range.
Accessories and Credentials
Credentials we stock for it
Programmed credentials are made to your site's card format, facility code and number range, so they need to match the system the reader is wired to. We do not list a mounting bracket, post or windscreen card holder for the U90 - contact us with your site details and we will help you source what the installation needs.
Power, Wiring and Panel Connection
The reader runs from 12 or 24 V DC and wires to the panel through three plug-in terminal connectors. It speaks Wiegand, which is the default, or OSDP - the choice is a reader setting, not a different part number.
Terminal connectors
- Keep the power cable short and heavy. The reader can draw 1 A at 12 V, and HID limits the power run to 12 m on 22 AWG or 30 m on 18 AWG.
- A supply that cannot source 2 A is a listed cause of faults - HID's troubleshooting table points to it when the diagnostic LED stays red.
- With OSDP, GPIO1 and GPIO2 are the RS-485 lines; GPIO3 and GPIO4 become an auxiliary input and output the panel can monitor and control.
- Seal the conduit entry. HID recommends liquid-tight conduit and fittings, or RTV silicone, once the cable is through the back box.
- The reader is static sensitive - handle it as you would any electronic board.
Full Specifications
Dimensions
Allow room around the reader for the bracket and for tilting it about 20 degrees down towards the lane. Mounting height and aim are under Lane Planning and Read Range.
Installation and Setup
- Plan the lane first - height, aim, distance from the gate and what sits behind the reader. See Lane Planning and Read Range.
- Prepare the back box. Take the reader off the back box, drill the marked points that suit your bracket or wall box, and drill the conduit hole.
- Trim the gasket with scissors to match the holes and the contact area between the mount and the box, then fix the back box and gasket to the mount.
- Wire it. Bring the cable in through the conduit hole, land it on the plug-in terminal connectors using the terminal table above, and seal the entry.
- Fit the reader to the back box - it hinges at the top and snaps in at the sides - and secure the bottom with the Phillips screws or the spanner security screws.
- Configure it. Connect a laptop to the reader's Ethernet port, log in to the web interface, select the region, turn on the RF field and run Autotune.
- Aim and test. Point the reader at the centre of the lane about 6 m ahead, then test with a card in a car and in a taller vehicle and fine-tune the angle.
- The reader will not transmit until a region has been set, and the region must be the right one for the site. Leave this to the installer and contact us if you are unsure.
- Change the web interface password during commissioning.
- Keep clear of the reader's face while Autotune runs. The diagnostic LED is blue during tuning and red when it finishes.
- The diagnostic LED sits under the trap door on the reader. It shows red at power-up and green when a card is read.
- HID's regulatory statement calls for the reader to be installed so that people are at least 20 cm from it in normal use.
- Use an adjustable bracket. HID recommends one so the aim can be fine-tuned after testing.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. It reads the UHF card and passes it to an access control panel, which makes the decision and signals the gate. The U90's three relays are for lights and sounders, and HID states they are not to be used for access control.
Up to 5 m. HID's guide sets the reader up for a 3 to 5 m range, measured from the reader to the card. The result depends on mounting height, aim, what is behind the reader and the vehicle's windscreen - see Lane Planning and Read Range.
UHF credentials to EPC Class 1 Gen 2 (ISO 18000-6C). For HID's secure data model the card must be an SIO-enabled UHF credential, such as the HID SIO-enabled UHF card we stock.
Not on their own. Door cards work at 13.56 MHz or 125 kHz and are read at a few centimetres; the U90 reads UHF. Drivers need a UHF card on the windscreen. Contact us if you want one credential for both gate and doors and we will check what HID can supply.
Yes. The housing is IP65 rated and works from -35 to 65 deg C. Trim the supplied gasket to seal the back box against its mount, and seal the conduit entry.
Additional Information
- Confirm the radio band before you order. HID makes the U90 for more than one regional UHF band, and the reader, its region setting and your UHF cards all have to agree. Contact us with your site details and we will confirm the reader we supply.
- Warranty on the U90. The lifetime cover in the warranty box is for HID's door readers and credentials. HID's warranty policy lists the iCLASS SE U90 on its own, at two years, alongside your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.
- Size the power supply for the peak. The U90 can draw 1 A at 12 V DC, and HID asks for a supply that can source at least 2 A. Where the cable run is long, 24 V DC halves the current.
- Test with real vehicles. HID recommends testing with a car and a truck, because card height changes with the vehicle. Tinted or heated windscreens can shorten the range.
- Reflecting surfaces distort the read zone. Concrete, glass and metal reflect radio energy and can stretch the reader's reach in directions you do not want, and building lighting can interfere - keep the area behind and around the reader clear.
Warranty
HID readers and credentials bought new through authorised channels are covered by HID Global's warranty against defects in materials and workmanship: lifetime cover on HID Signo, iCLASS SE and HID Proximity readers and on HID-branded Seos, iCLASS, Proximity, MIFARE DESFire and UHF cards, fobs and tags, and 2 years on iCLASS SE reader accessories. Proof of purchase required for all claims.
The iCLASS SE U90 is named separately in HID's warranty policy, with a two-year term - not the lifetime cover shown above for HID's door readers.

HID iCLASS SE U90 Long Range UHF Reader - FAQ, Setup and Owner's Guide
Everything below is here to help you choose, plan, wire, set up and live with the HID iCLASS SE U90 long range reader. For general questions see our Smart Lock FAQ (Chapter 13), and for the bigger picture start with the Buyer's Guide.
Choosing the Right Reader
It is a long range UHF access control reader for gated and monitored vehicle entry. It reads a UHF card on a vehicle windscreen from up to 5 m and passes it to an access control panel. It is 231 mm square and 70 mm deep, runs on 12 or 24 V DC and is IP65 rated.
No. It holds no users and does not decide who gets in - it is one part of a wired access control system. The panel holds the access rights and signals the gate.
Gated or monitored parking. HID states the reader is not intended for other applications, so it is not a substitute for a door reader.
Range and frequency. The HID iCLASS SE R15 reads 13.56 MHz cards held within a few centimetres. The U90 reads UHF cards from metres away, which is what lets a driver stay in the vehicle.
It is not made for that. For doors see the HID iCLASS SE R15 or the rest of the HID range, and for pedestrian gates see our outdoor gate lock range.
Read Range and Lane Planning
HID quotes up to 5 m as the typical maximum, and its guide sets the reader up for 3 to 5 m measured from the reader to the card. Installation conditions and the vehicle's windscreen both affect it.
1.8 to 2.4 m above the lane where space allows. HID gives that height for good performance with a mix of cars and full-size trucks.
At the centre of the vehicle lane about 6 m ahead of the reader, which works out at roughly 20 degrees down from horizontal. Fine adjustments are made during testing.
Within 2 m. Further back, a vehicle waiting at the gate can sit past the reader's field and the card will not be read.
Concrete, glass and metal reflect radio energy, and the reader has a small rear lobe as well as its wide front one. A reflecting surface behind it can stretch or distort the read zone, so HID's ideal installation has none.
A badly placed reader can pick up a vehicle in the next lane or the one behind. HID's planning guidance - height, down-tilt, distance to the gate and tuned power - is there to prevent that. See Lane Planning and Read Range.
Avoid mounting two readers close together back to back. HID warns that one reader can interfere with the other.
Cards and Windscreens
UHF credentials to EPC Class 1 Gen 2, also known as ISO 18000-6C. HID's secure option is an SIO-enabled UHF card.
The HID SIO-enabled UHF card, programmed by HID to your site's details. We collect your card format and number range on an order form after you order, and the minimum order is 100 cards.
EPC is the card's standard UHF identity number. The SIO is HID's encrypted, card-bound data object. The reader can send both, which is the default, or either one alone - useful where an existing system already works on EPC numbers.
At least 5 cm in from the edge of the glass, and at least 5 cm below any conductive tinted band across the top. Non-conductive tint does not affect performance.
They can. HID notes that tinted or heated windscreens may reduce read range, and advises checking the vehicle manual. Moving the card a few centimetres can make the difference.
Not a reflective one. HID warns that the heat trapped between a reflective sun shade and the glass can damage the card.
Power and Wiring
12 V DC or 24 V DC. At 12 V it draws 320 mA on standby, 400 mA maximum average and 1.0 A at peak; at 24 V the figures are 160 mA, 200 mA and 0.5 A. HID asks for a supply that can source at least 2 A.
Up to 12 m on 22 AWG cable or 30 m on 18 AWG. That is far shorter than the data run, so plan where the power supply sits.
It works with panels that take Wiegand or OSDP readers. Wiegand is the default. Tell us the panel make and model and we will confirm it before you order.
Up to 152 m on 22 AWG for Wiegand, or up to 1,219 m on 24 AWG for RS-485.
External audio and visual indicators such as a light or sounder. They are dry contacts rated 30 V DC at 2 A resistive. HID states they are not to be used for access control.
It lets the panel control when the reader reports cards. In its default Parking Hold setting the reader polls for cards only while the hold line is released. Other settings poll continuously, or poll continuously but report only while the line is released.
Setup and Configuration
From a web browser. Connect a laptop to the reader's Ethernet port and log in to its built-in management pages, which cover communications, inputs and outputs, region and tuning, and OSDP.
A function that tunes the reader to its surroundings. It runs on demand from the web interface and usually takes only a short time; keep the area in front of the reader clear while it runs.
UHF radio rules differ from country to country, so the reader will not turn its radio on until a region is configured. Changing the region restarts the reader.
Yes. HID's guide says the password should be changed as soon as possible for security reasons. A reset procedure is in the user guide if it is lost.
A wall, a post or an adjustable bracket. The back box has marked drill points for 75, 100 and 200 mm VESA brackets and for US and EU wall boxes.
A security installer. The reader has to be positioned, aimed, configured and tested with vehicles, and matched to the panel. See our advice and installation page and installation across the Gold Coast.
Weather, Care and Troubleshooting
Yes. The housing is IP65 rated and works from -35 to 65 deg C. See our guide to IP ratings.
With the supplied gasket, trimmed to match the contact area between the box and its mount, and with liquid-tight conduit fittings or RTV silicone at the cable entry.
HID's troubleshooting table lists several causes: the RF field is switched off, no region has been set, the power supply cannot source at least 2 A, or the reader has not been tuned. Work through them in that order.
Re-run Autotune with nothing near the reader's face, check the aim, and try moving the card a few centimetres on the windscreen. Approach speed and a hand in front of the card can also stop a read.
Compliance and Warranty
UL294 and cUL, the CB Scheme, FCC, IC, CE, IFETEL and ANATEL. Contact us before you order and we will confirm the reader we supply suits your site.
Two years. HID's warranty policy lists the iCLASS SE U90 separately from its door readers, which carry lifetime cover. Details are under Warranty.
SIO-enabled credentials carry encrypted data bound to the card, and the reader's cryptographic operations run in an EAL5+ certified processor. Over OSDP the link to the panel can be secured as well.
Yes. Terry's offers site surveys and installation on the Gold Coast. Start with a site survey or our advice and installation page.

HID Warranty
HID branded readers, credentials and accessories are covered by warranties issued by HID Global Corporation and its affiliated entities (part of ASSA ABLOY), distributed in Australia by LSC. Most HID readers and HID-branded credentials carry lifetime cover; a small number of specific models and accessories carry a fixed term instead.
The summary below sets out HID's published warranty structure. All warranty claims are handled by Terry's Tradies Pty Ltd and its associated websites, trading names, and subsidiaries. Full terms and exclusions are set out in the official HID Global Warranty Policy linked at the base of this page.
Warranty Summary
Understanding "Lifetime" Cover
HID's published policy uses the term "Lifetime Warranty Period" without defining it further - it is not stated as a fixed number of years, "for the life of the product", or "as long as you own it". It applies for as long as HID continues to honour that stated period under its published policy.
How to Make a Claim
- Contact Terry's Tradies Pty Ltd and its associated websites, trading names, and subsidiaries with your proof of original purchase and a description of the fault.
- Where a claim needs to be escalated, HID requires written notice from the end customer within the applicable warranty period - we handle this notification on your behalf.
- HID's remedy, at its own option, is to repair the product, replace it, or issue a credit towards a future purchase.
- Postage, insurance and shipping costs to present hardware for warranty assessment are the end customer's responsibility under HID's policy - we'll advise what's needed before anything is sent.
Exclusions
This warranty does not cover, and will be voided by, any of the following:
- Installation by anyone other than HID or an HID-authorised installer
- Use other than as authorised in HID's own documentation
- Modification, alteration or repair by a party other than HID
- Combination with hardware, operating systems or tools not provided by HID
- Accident, neglect, misuse or negligence
- Upgrades, evaluation units and demonstration units
- Consumables - batteries, paper, pads, cleaning solution, towels, cartridges and cables
Important Notes
This manufacturer warranty applies in addition to your rights under the Australian Consumer Law. Our goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the ACL. You are entitled to a replacement or refund for a major failure and to compensation for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. Where a failure does not amount to a major failure, you are entitled to have the goods repaired or replaced.
HID's published policy states the warranty is solely for the benefit of the original end customer. Products purchased through Terry's Tradies Pty Ltd and its associated websites are covered as supplied - contact us in the first instance for any claim rather than approaching HID directly.
A small number of HID accessories (such as certain Signo mounting plates and wall spacers) are not individually named in HID's published policy. Where this applies, contact us to confirm the term that applies to your specific item before relying on the Lifetime cover shown above for readers.
