Fire Kit for KAS NEO Lock
The KAS Fire Kit (FRK101) is required when installing the KAS NEO smart lock onto a fire-rated door using a 60mm, 70mm, or 127mm tubular latch. It is used to ensure the correct installation configuration for fire door compliance when the KAS NEO is fitted to a fire-rated doorset assembly. See the KAS NEO fire door section and KAS NEO in the Fire Door Smart Locks Guide for context on how the NEO is certified for fire door use.
This kit is not required for mortice latch installations. When the KAS NEO is installed with the KAS ML-S Mortice Latch (MLS001), the fire kit is not applicable — see the applicable KAS fire door assessment documents for the correct mortice configuration requirements.
When Is the Fire Kit Required?
- KAS NEO lock on a fire-rated door
- Installed with a tubular latch (60mm, 70mm, or 127mm backset)
- Doorset is E-Core, Firecore, or Pyropanel assessed for this combination
- KAS NEO on a non-fire-rated door
- KAS NEO installed with a mortice latch
- Any other KAS lock model (Platinum, HAR400) — confirm separately
KAS states that the weather gaskets supplied with the KAS NEO lock must not be used when installing on a fire-rated door. Using the weather gaskets on a fire door installation may affect compliance. Remove and set aside any gaskets before fitting on a fire-rated doorset.
The FRK101 fire kit alone does not make an installation fire compliant. Fire compliance depends on the complete doorset — the door, frame, lock, latch, and all associated hardware — being an assessed and approved combination under the applicable KAS fire certification. The fire kit forms a required component of the correct tubular latch configuration on assessed doorsets only. See Fire Door Core Types — E-Core, Firecore, and Pyropanel, Fire Door Types and Certification Guide, and the AS1905.1 Test Certificate Reference List before specifying for any fire door project.

Frequently Asked Questions
No — only when installing the KAS NEO on a fire-rated door using a tubular latch (60mm, 70mm, or 127mm). If the door is not fire rated, or if you are using a mortice latch, this kit is not required. See Where Fire Doors Are Required in Queensland and How to Identify a Fire Door if unsure.
KAS states that the weather gaskets supplied with the NEO lock must not be used when installing on a fire-rated door. Gaskets affect the seal condition at the door face, which is part of the tested installation configuration. Using them on a fire door deviates from the assessed setup and may affect compliance. Remove and store the gaskets aside before fitting on any fire-rated doorset.
No. KAS states this kit is not required when the KAS NEO is installed with a mortice latch. The fire door compliance pathway for mortice configurations differs — refer to the applicable KAS fire assessment documents for the mortice lock/latch combination being installed.
Not on its own. Fire compliance depends on the complete assessed doorset combination — the correct door type, frame, lock, latch, and installation method all forming part of an assessed and approved system. The FRK101 is a required component of the correct tubular latch configuration but does not independently certify a doorset. See Which Locks Are Compliant on Fire Doors and the AS1905.1 Test Certificate Reference List.
Yes. Some fire door cores — including certain Pyropanel FRB products manufactured through to 2025 — may contain asbestos. Drilling or cutting these cores without testing creates a serious health risk. Read Asbestos in Apartment Fire Doors — Drilling Risk, Smart Lock FAQ — Asbestos, and Asbestos in Queensland Fire Doors before drilling any fire door in a building constructed before 1990.
Additional Information
The FRK101 is required for KAS NEO tubular latch installations on fire-rated doors — but compliance also depends on which fire door core system is present. KAS has fire assessments across E-Core, Firecore, and Pyropanel doorsets. Confirm the door core type before specifying. See Fire Door Core Types — E-Core, Firecore, and Pyropanel and Fire Door Types and Certification Guide.
In Queensland, fire doors are required in specific building classifications — stairwells, apartment corridors, mixed-use commercial and residential buildings, and aged care facilities among them. If you are installing on a strata apartment fire door, additional checks apply before any hardware changes can be made. See Where Fire Doors Are Required in Queensland, Strata Apartment Fire Door Checklist, and Body Corporate Approval for Fire Door Changes.
In Queensland, fire doors in apartments are typically subject to the one-penetration principle — only one lock penetration is permitted through the door face. Adding a second lock to a fire door that already has a primary lock may not be permitted. See The One-Penetration Principle in Queensland Apartments before specifying any lock change on an apartment fire door.
KAS fire door installations require professional trade knowledge to achieve compliance. Incorrect installation on a fire-rated door may affect the fire rating of the doorset and create a life-safety risk. Do not attempt fire door lock replacements without appropriate trade qualification and knowledge of the applicable AS1905.1 assessment. See Why Fire Door Lock Work Is Not DIY, Smart Lock Installation Mistakes, and 3 Common Smart Lock Installation Mistakes. For supply and professional installation, see Terry's Site Survey and Installation Service.
Where an existing lock left a larger penetration than the KAS NEO faceplate covers, a scar plate may be required to reinstate the fire door face. Scar plates for fire door applications must themselves be fire-rated to avoid voiding the doorset's FRL. See Fire Door Scar Plates — What Is Required.
If you are assessing smart lock options for a fire door project more broadly — beyond just the KAS NEO — see Which Smart Lock Platform — Fire Doors for context on how different platforms handle fire door certification.
