KAS Mortice Latch ML - S Reversible Latch
The KAS Mortice Latch ML-S is a reversible spring-bolt mortice latch designed for use with KAS NEO, KAS ACR, and KAS PLATINUM smart lock systems where a mortice door preparation is required. Unlike tubular latches — which insert into a bored cylindrical hole — a mortice latch sits in a rectangular pocket cut into the door edge, providing a different door preparation format suited to specific door types and commercial applications. See Mortice Latches Explained for background on when a mortice format is the right choice over a tubular latch.
The ML-S is onsite reversible — the latch bolt direction can be changed during installation without returning the unit for factory re-configuration, making it suitable for both left-hand and right-hand door openings from a single stock item. It is designed for retrofit into existing mortice lock preparations, typically used where a 70mm case-depth mortice was previously installed, and for new installations where the door and frame are prepared for a mortice format. See Cylindrical vs Mortice Door Preparation for guidance on which format suits your installation.
The ML-S requires a rectangular mortice pocket in the door edge — the same preparation used for traditional lever-on-rose mortice locksets. It does not fit a bored cylindrical hole. Confirm your door preparation format before ordering. If your door has a bored cylindrical hole, see the KAS Tubular Latch NTL060 (60mm), NTL070 (70mm), or NTL127 (127mm) instead.
When installing the ML-S on a fire-rated door, the complete doorset assembly — including the door, frame, lock, and latch — must form part of an assessed and compliant combination. Mortice and tubular latch configurations carry different fire outcomes on some KAS-assessed doorsets. See Fire Door Core Types and the KAS NEO Fire Door section before specifying. See also Apartment Fire Doors — Which Locks Are Compliant.
Key Features
- Reversible spring-bolt mortice latch — bolt direction can be changed onsite for left-hand or right-hand door openings without factory re-configuration
- Designed for doors with an existing mortice lock preparation or new mortice-format door installations
- Compatible with KAS NEO, KAS ACR, and KAS PLATINUM smart lock systems
- Suited to retrofit upgrades where an existing 70mm mortice preparation is already in the door
- Provides the latch function required for KAS smart lock operation in a mortice body format
- Spring-bolt operation — auto-latches on door close; lever operation retracts the bolt for entry
- Sold separately from the smart lock — the lock body is not included with KAS NEO, HAR400, or PLATINUM
What's in the Box
- KAS ML-S Mortice Latch body (MLS001)
- Reversing plate / follower (for handing change)
- Strike plate
- Fixing screws
Suitable Uses
- Retrofit upgrades of existing mortice lock preparations to KAS smart lock hardware — particularly where a legacy mortice lock of similar case depth is being replaced
- New commercial door installations where mortice door preparation is specified by the architect or builder
- Doors where a tubular latch is not suitable due to door type, thickness, or existing preparation
- Commercial and accommodation environments where the KAS NEO, ACR, or PLATINUM system is already deployed with mortice-prepared doors
- Heritage or older commercial building doors where mortice format is the established standard
- Any KAS smart lock installation where the door preparation matches a mortice format — confirm with checking the existing hardware format before ordering

Frequently Asked Questions
A tubular latch installs into a bored cylindrical hole in the door — the standard preparation for most modern residential and commercial doors. A mortice latch installs into a rectangular pocket cut into the door edge — the preparation traditionally associated with lever-on-rose mortice locksets. See Mortice Latches Explained and Tubular Latches Explained for detail on each type.
No — most KAS NEO, ACR, and PLATINUM installations use a tubular latch (NTL060, NTL070, or NTL127). The ML-S is only required where the door has a rectangular mortice pocket preparation, or where a mortice format is specified for the project. If your door has a bored cylindrical hole, use the appropriate NTL tubular latch instead.
The bolt direction can be changed onsite — the spring bolt can be configured for either left-hand or right-hand door opening without sending the latch back to the factory. This means a single stock item covers both handing configurations, which simplifies ordering when the door hand is not known in advance. See Determining Your Door Handing.
Only where the full combination of lock, latch, doorset, and frame is assessed and compliant as a system. Mortice and tubular configurations carry different fire outcomes on some KAS doorsets — the applicable fire certificate must cover the specific mortice latch combination being installed. See Fire Door Core Types, Fire Door Types and Certification Guide, and the AS1905.1 Test Certificate Reference List before specifying for fire door work.
ANSI F05 and F54 are the two common mortice function classifications — F05 is a passage latch (spring bolt, no locking) and F54 is a storeroom / entrance latch. The ML-S is a spring-bolt mortice latch (passage-type function — F05 classification), not a deadbolt mortice lock. See ANSI Mortice Locks and Smart Lock Compatibility for context.
Additional Information
The ML-S is designed for retrofit where an existing mortice lock of similar case depth is being replaced with a KAS smart lock. Before ordering, confirm the exact dimensions of the existing mortice pocket in the door — faceplate width, case depth, and spindle hole position must all be compatible with the ML-S. See Checking Your Existing Hardware and Mortice Lever and Escutcheon Format before purchasing.
Mortice latch installation requires precise pocket cutting if the door is not already prepared, and careful alignment of spindle, faceplate, and strike plate. Misalignment causes binding and premature wear. KAS recommends professional installation. See 3 Common Smart Lock Installation Mistakes and Door Misalignment — Installation Mistake 3. For complex commercial projects, consider Terry's Site Survey and Installation Service.
KAS fire door assessments show that mortice and tubular latch configurations can carry different FRL outcomes on some doorsets. Do not substitute a mortice latch for a tubular latch (or vice versa) on a fire door without confirming the applicable assessment document covers that specific combination. See Fire Door Core Types Guide and AS1905.1 Test Certificate Reference List. If installing on a fire door in an older building, see Asbestos Risk Before Drilling Fire Doors and Asbestos in Queensland Fire Doors.
Where an existing mortice lock has left a larger or differently-shaped pocket than the ML-S faceplate covers, a scar plate may be required to fill the gap and provide a clean finish on the door face. This is a common retrofit situation. See When Do You Need a Scar Plate? for guidance.
KAS states that latches are not included with the KAS NEO Cloud Lock (HOP310) or KAS Platinum Lock (HP) and must be ordered separately. The ML-S must be added to your order alongside the lock body for a complete installation.
