Igloohome Retrofit Lock: Case Study

Igloohome Retrofit Lock Case Study
Remote Airbnb host. Existing pull handles. Same-day deadline. Here’s how the Retrofit Lock plus a remote Keypad solved a brief that ruled out every other smart lock in our showroom.

The Brief in 30 Seconds
Airbnb host needed remote PIN management on an entry door with large existing pull handles. Replacing the hardware was not acceptable. The client was 1,500km from the property. Guests were arriving the same day.
Igloohome Retrofit Lock on the inside of the door (no exterior changes), plus a remote-mounted Igloohome Keypad for PIN entry. No drilling. No WiFi bridge required. Airbnb Connect for guest PIN automation.
Installation completed before guests arrived. Existing pull handle preserved. Host gained full remote PIN management from 1,500km away. No ongoing WiFi dependency at the property.
The Client Brief in Detail
An Airbnb host approached us with five specific requirements, all of which had to be satisfied for the install to proceed:
- Remote guest PIN management. The host needed to issue time-limited PINs for each Airbnb booking, with no on-site involvement per reservation.
- Operate from 1,500km away. The host was not present at the property and would not be visiting before guests arrived. Any setup that required the host to be physically present beyond the initial install was disqualifying.
- Preserve existing pull handles. The door already had large pull handles fitted on both sides — part of the property’s design language. Replacing them was not acceptable.
- No lever design. A traditional smart lock with a lever handle would visually clash with and physically compete against the existing pull hardware. Levers were out.
- Same-day urgency. Guests were arriving that day. Anything requiring procurement of unusual parts, custom door modification, or trade scheduling beyond the existing trades on-site was not viable.
This combination of requirements ruled out almost every option in our showroom. Most smart locks either replace the existing handle entirely (incompatible with requirement 3) or sit prominently on the door face beside the existing handle (visually clashing, often physically conflicting). Locks requiring drilling or door modification were ruled out by the same-day deadline. And anything dependent on reliable WiFi at the property required infrastructure we couldn’t confirm.
BEFORE
The entry door as it existed when the host contacted us — large pull handles in place, traditional key-only access from outside:

Why the Igloohome Retrofit Lock Won the Evaluation
After reviewing the door, the cylinder type, and the host’s requirements, the Igloohome Retrofit Lock emerged as the only product in our range that satisfied every constraint without compromise.
Four structural advantages made it the right choice for this brief:
1. The Retrofit Lock mounts on the inside face of the door.
It clamps over the existing Euro cylinder thumbturn from inside the property. The exterior of the door is completely untouched. Pull handles, finish, paint, and aesthetic are preserved exactly as they were.
2. No drilling required.
The Retrofit Lock uses a clamping mechanism on the existing cylinder — no holes are drilled, no door modifications are made. The same-day deadline was achievable because the install itself takes around 15-20 minutes with hand tools only.
3. The Keypad mounts remotely — not on the door.
The Igloohome Keypad communicates with the Retrofit Lock over Bluetooth at distances up to 30m. The Retrofit Lock uniquely supports up to two paired Keypads (most Igloohome locks pair with only one). The Keypad was mounted on the wall beside the door — no conflict with the pull handle, no clutter on the door face, fully accessible to guests.
4. Secure administration without a Wi-Fi Bridge.
Igloohome’s algoPIN system means the host can generate time-limited PINs from anywhere via the igloohome app — the codes work on the lock without any WiFi at the property. With Airbnb Connect enabled, the entire process is automatic. No WiFi infrastructure was required for the install to function from day one. For the technical mechanics, see our guide to Using Igloohome for Airbnb in Australia.
The Implementation
The install itself was straightforward once the door had been confirmed as Euro-cylinder-compatible:
- Door verification. Confirmed the existing cylinder was a standard Euro profile — the Retrofit Lock’s only firm prerequisite. (For doors with Australian oval cylinders or other non-Euro profiles, this product won’t fit.)
- Lock body installation. The Retrofit Lock unit was clamped over the existing thumbturn on the inside face. No drilling, no permanent modifications.
- Keypad mounting. The Keypad was mounted on the adjacent wall using the supplied screws — well within the 30m Bluetooth range from the Retrofit Lock.
- Bluetooth pairing. Lock and Keypad paired to the host’s igloohome app via Bluetooth. The master PIN was set.
- Airbnb Connect. The host linked their Airbnb account inside the app and connected the lock to the property’s listing. The PIN delivery timing was set to 24 hours before check-in.
- Test booking. The host generated a test PIN and confirmed it worked at the Keypad. The first real guest’s PIN was already queued for delivery.
Total time on site: under an hour. No trades scheduled beyond the existing locksmith call-out. Guests arrived later that day and entered using the auto-generated PIN with no issues.
AFTER
The completed installation. Note that the pull handles are untouched, the door face is unchanged, and the Keypad sits cleanly on the adjacent wall rather than competing with the door hardware:

Did the Install Satisfy Every Requirement?
| Original Requirement | Result |
|---|---|
| Remote guest PIN management | Yes — Airbnb Connect generates PINs automatically per booking |
| Client able to manage from 1,500km away | Yes — no on-site action required after initial setup |
| Preserve existing pull handles | Yes — exterior of the door unchanged |
| No lever conflict | Yes — the Retrofit Lock has no external lever |
| Completed before guests arrived (same day) | Yes — install completed in under an hour |
Lessons for Similar Installations
This brief comes up more often than you might think. Hosts with character properties, modern architectural doors, or any door with prominent existing hardware face the same fundamental problem: how do you add smart access without destroying the door’s look?
If you’re facing a similar brief, here are the prerequisites that make this install pattern work:
The cylinder must be Euro profile.
The Retrofit Lock is engineered specifically for Euro cylinders. Australian oval cylinders, KIK cylinders, and other formats are not compatible. If your door has a non-Euro cylinder, the Retrofit Lock is not an option — you’ll need a different approach (often a full hardware replacement or a Keybox 3 alongside the existing lock).
The door must open inward.
Because the unit mounts on the inside face. For doors that open outward (some commercial entries, some balcony doors), the geometry doesn’t work.
Indoor installation only.
The Retrofit Lock body lives on the inside face of the door — it’s not weather-rated for outdoor exposure. The Keypad is outdoor-rated (IP66), so it can mount in sheltered external positions.
Plan the Keypad location.
Up to 30m from the Retrofit Lock and up to two Keypads supported. Mount where it’s accessible for guests but not in direct heavy rain. Beside the door, on a sheltered wall, or under an eave are all common positions.
Pull handles, ornate hardware, or smart locks not wanted on the door face? This is the pattern.
If preserving the door’s existing look is non-negotiable, this is currently the only mainstream Airbnb-suitable smart access option in the Australian market that achieves it. For everything you need to measure before ordering, see Chapter 02 — Measuring Your Door in the Buyer’s Guide.
If the Host Adds WiFi Later
This install runs entirely offline today. But the door is “Bridge-ready” — if the host decides remote notifications, live battery monitoring or remote unlock would be valuable in future, an igloohome Wi-Fi Bridge can be plugged in at any time.
The Bridge needs to be within 7m of the Retrofit Lock (and within range of the property’s WiFi router). One Bridge supports up to 5 Igloohome devices, so it can also cover a Keybox 3, Padlock 2, or other Igloohome locks on the same property.
