FK Surf Surf Key Hider Magnetic (large) - Display Pack
The FK Surf Surf Key Hider Magnetic (large) is a Ritefit-manufactured magnetic key box designed to hold a car key and attach to any metal surface using a built-in magnet. The slide-off lid gives quick access to the stored key, and the unit is sized for most car keys. It is sold as a display pack - individually packaged in Ritefit retail presentation.
Magnetic key hiders work on a concealment-by-placement principle: the unit is attached out of sight - under a vehicle's chassis, inside a wheel arch, on the underside of a metal surface - so a key is accessible when needed without being visible. Unlike a combination keysafe, there is no code to remember and no mechanism to maintain. The key is simply stored inside and the box held in position by the magnet.
The large model carries a stronger magnet than the standard Ritefit model to hold the additional weight of a car key and fob. It is not suitable for attachment to stainless steel surfaces, which are non-magnetic. The unit is not waterproof or sealed to an IP rating - it is suited to sheltered or semi-sheltered mounting positions rather than fully exposed outdoor use.
A magnetic key hider offers no relay attack protection. If a proximity smart key fob is stored inside unshielded, thieves with signal amplification equipment can detect and relay the fob's radio signal from the hidden location to unlock and start the vehicle. Store mechanical keys (door-only cut keys with no radio signal) in this hider. If you need to store a smart fob, use the FK Surf Deluxe Keysafe with its included RFID signal-blocking wallet instead.

Frequently Asked Questions
Choose a location that is out of direct sight from ground level and hard to reach without knowing it is there. Common positions include the underside of a steel tow bar, inside a tow ball receiver socket, on the inside of a wheel arch (avoid direct road spray), or on a flat steel chassis rail. Avoid the front bumper or any position visible from the car park. The magnet holds better on clean, dry steel - remove any surface grime from the mounting point before attaching.
No. A magnetic key hider provides no RFID or radio frequency shielding. A smart fob stored inside is still broadcasting its signal and is vulnerable to relay attack - thieves can amplify the signal from the hidden location and use it to unlock and start the vehicle. Store mechanical cut keys only. For smart fob storage with signal blocking, see the FK Surf Deluxe Keysafe.
The magnet is rated for most car key weight and is designed for vehicle undercarriage use, but it is not tested to a specific hold rating in dynamic conditions. At high speed on rough roads, vibration can dislodge the unit from a marginally flat surface. Choose the flattest, cleanest steel surface available. The unit is not waterproof - in direct water exposure (car wash, rain splash on the undercarriage) the key inside can get wet. A sheltered mounting position is recommended for long-term storage. For what coastal Queensland conditions do to hardware in general, see: Coastal Environments — The Realities.
A magnetic key hider is a concealment device - the key is hidden but not locked. Anyone who finds it can take the key. A combination keysafe (such as the FK Surf Standard Keysafe) locks the key behind a combination and can be physically attached via a shackle. The keysafe offers more resistance to deliberate theft; the magnetic hider offers more convenience and speed of access. For beach use where the keysafe is attached to the tow bar, the keysafe is generally the more secure option. The magnetic hider is better suited as a permanent emergency spare hidden out of sight at a fixed location.
Most modern vehicle body panels are steel and are magnetic. Plastic bumper covers, fibreglass panels, and aluminium panels are not magnetic. The magnet will not attach to stainless steel either. Test the mounting surface with any household magnet before relying on this hider. If your target surface is non-magnetic, there is no safe way to use this unit in that location - do not attempt to force or tape it in position.
Additional Information
A magnetic key hider relies entirely on not being found. A determined thief who knows to look for a magnetic key hider under a vehicle will find it quickly. The risk is low in most everyday situations, but it is worth understanding: this is an emergency spare storage device, not a security product. For genuine key security with a combination lock, see the FK Surf Standard Keysafe. For a broader discussion of key hider placement strategy, see: Key Hiders: Smarter Than Under the Doormat. This product has no combination lock and no key override — for context on products that intentionally omit a key override mechanism, see: Smart Locks Without a Key Override.
At the beach, the right key storage solution depends on what key you have. A magnetic hider works well as a low-profile spare hidden on a steel surface out of sight. For active surf use where the vehicle is left in a car park, most surfers prefer a shackle-mount keysafe that is physically locked - the FK Surf Standard Keysafe (mechanical key) or FK Surf Deluxe Keysafe (smart fob with RFID wallet) are purpose-built for this scenario. See our full guide: Secure Key Storage with a Heavy-Duty Surf Lock Box.
If a magnetic hider does not suit your surface or situation, Terry's stocks two camouflaged key hiders: the Lucky Line Rock Key Hider (realistic stone appearance, suited to gardens and landscaping) and the Lucky Line Sprinkler Key Hider (disguised as a garden sprinkler head). Both are concealment-by-disguise rather than concealment-by-magnet - suited to property perimeters where there is no metal surface available. For a larger magnetic key box, the JMA Magnetic Hide Key Box is an alternative in the same category. For the connected alternative — a Bluetooth-enabled key safe — see: Bluetooth Key Safes. For guidance on storing a spare mechanical key outside the property, see: Storing the Override Key Outside the House.
