McGrath Locks 2.0mm Triangle Screwdriver - Magnetic Tip - Red Handle

This McGrath Locks 2.0mm triangle screwdriver is the correct servicing tool for removing and refitting the battery compartment cover on the McGrath Ascot smart lock. The Ascot uses a 2.0mm triangular security screw rather than the Torx screw found on the rest of the McGrath range, so it needs this dedicated triangle tip.

The magnetic tip holds the small cover screws in place during removal and refitting - useful when you are working on an external gate lock and do not want to lose a screw in the grass or on the driveway.

This product is a replacement tool only. It does not include a lock, batteries, or fasteners. It is the counterpart to the blue-handled Torx screwdriver used on all other McGrath locks.

Compatible With
McGrath Ascot locks only. The Ascot is the double-sided tubular smart lock rated for external pedestrian gates, and it is the one model in the range that uses a triangle battery-cover screw. Every other McGrath lock uses a Torx screw and needs the blue-handled Torx tool instead (see below).

Key Features

  • Correct 2.0mm triangle tip for the Ascot battery compartment cover screw.
  • Magnetic tip retains small screws during removal and refitting.
  • Red handle - the colour code for the Ascot (triangle) tool, so it is easy to tell apart from the blue Torx tool.
  • Sized for the confined cover recess on the Ascot lock.
  • Replacement / spare servicing tool - keep one in the toolkit for battery changes.

What's in the Box

  • 1 x McGrath 2.0mm triangle screwdriver with magnetic tip (red handle)

Suitable Uses

  • Opening the battery compartment cover on the McGrath Ascot lock for battery replacement.
  • Routine servicing where the Ascot cover must be removed and refitted without damaging the triangle screw.

  • Replacing a lost or worn tool originally supplied with the Ascot lock.

Available Finish Options

  • Red handle

The red handle is a colour code that identifies this as the Ascot (triangle) tool. The equivalent tool for all other McGrath locks has a blue handle. Handle colour does not affect the tool's function.

Using a Non-Ascot McGrath Lock?
Every McGrath lock other than the Ascot uses a Torx battery-cover screw, not a triangle screw. For those models - Albion, Windsor, Hamilton, Stafford, Bardon, ULTRA-SECUA and the rest - you need the blue-handled tool instead: View the Torx Screwdriver.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which McGrath lock does this tool suit?
The McGrath Ascot only. Every other McGrath lock uses a Torx screw and needs the blue-handled Torx screwdriver instead.
Why does the Ascot use a different screw to the other locks?
The Ascot is a double-sided tubular lock designed for external gate use, and its battery cover uses a 2.0mm triangular security screw for a flush, tamper-resistant fit. A Torx tip will not seat in a triangle recess, so the correct triangle tool is needed. For general context on battery life and what actually needs attention over a lock's life, see The Realities of Electronic Door Locks.
The Ascot batteries are flat - can I still get in?
Yes. The Ascot accepts a mechanical key override via its keyed cylinder. Once you are back in, this tool lets you open the cover to fit fresh cells. See Mechanical Key Override on Smart Locks for what to do when the battery dies, and the Ascot keyed cylinder if you need a spare.
Does the tool come with batteries or a lock?
No. This is a replacement servicing tool only - no lock, no batteries, no fasteners.

Additional Information

Red vs Blue - Know Before You Order
McGrath colour-codes the two servicing tools: red = 2.0mm triangle (this tool, Ascot only) and blue = Torx (all other models). Ordering by colour is the quickest way to get the right one. The Ascot is the double-sided tubular model rated for external gates; if that is not your lock, you almost certainly need the blue Torx tool.
Battery Servicing
Keeping fresh batteries in the lock is the single most effective bit of maintenance you can do - and it matters even more on an external gate lock exposed to the weather. For McGrath's platform battery habits and tips, see TTLock Tips and Tricks - Battery Management, and for realistic expectations on how long a digital lock lasts overall, see How Long Do Digital Door Locks Last?
